Where has this museum been all my life?

For some reason, I missed out on visiting this museum until now, 2024. It’s lovely – the French really give good National Museum! Once you get past the tiny car park and the slightly ineffectual airport-style security, you are in a fabulous modernist building (see photos) in beautiful extensive grounds. Tall ceilings, nice finishes, huge stained glass windows, the works. And a refreshingly-small gift shop at the end.
Fernand Léger may not be known all that well outside of France, but he probably should be. Currently (until 18 November 2024) there is a brilliant exhibition which sets some of his many works into context by pairing them with the output of famous and not-so-famous artists’ oeuvres loaned by the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) in Nice. Perfect fo r the artistically naive such as me. All curated in English as well as French. I cannot recommend it too highly. Most of the building seem to be given over to this very clever exhibition; then there is a “permanent” collection of Léger which is also interesting and well curated.

Now that I have discovered it, I suspect I’ll go back every year.

Fabulous museum on Fernand Leger (1881-1955). The building was inaugurated in 1960 in the presence of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Marc Chagall. Nice architecture by André Svetchine (1912-1996), who also designed two villas for Marc Chagall and a chateau for Christian Dior.

Fantastic spot with breath-taking artworks of an iconic artist of the 20th century. It demonstrates how much Leger has developed its talent through various art styles from concrete over to very abstract and back to objective painting in big formats. It further gives impressive evidence how political Leger was (incl. member of the communist party) but to his dillusion was apparently left not understood with his cubistic/abstract paintings by the working classes at the time.

A little out of the way but very worth going.

In fact, i went there after Picasso museum and really enjoyed myself. I found the artwork beautiful and the building airy and bright.

If you are not driving, i highly recommend taking an uber  to the museum. Its 15 mins drive from Picasso Museum in Antibes. That way, if you decide to walk to the train station, the way back is easier as the museum is on a hill. It took me 30 mins to walk back. The walk was nice though, as it'll bring you across alot of greenery and there's a well marked pedestrian walkway.

Note that special exhibitions are closed between 12-230pm. I waited but on hindsight , could have skipped it. Wasnt as nice as Leger's work.

Our dining experience was wonderful! The orange sauce with the calamari was delightful, and the lemon risotto was absolutely perfect. It was such a unique dish, I’ve never tasted anything like it—the hazelnuts were such an inspired crunchy addition to a creamy dish. My husband loved his duck entree and this is a meal we’ll both remember fondly.

Delightful traditional French restaurant in the heart of old Nice.
Staff were fabulous.

Book early because it is always fully booked. Very good restaurant. Michelin star. Price is good for the quality of food. Food portion is small even for Asian so I would recommend to take the full course. Desert is very good. All food we order are good. Menu changes frequently. A must try in Nice!

Delicious and classic French food. Unfortunately my main course risotto was served a bit cooled, but it was still very good - so good actually that I did not return the dish. The wines were amazing and service very friendly. Would definitely recommend a visit!
