Summer in Milan – 

Day Trips, Restaurants and Local Insider Tips

 – A Mediterranean restaurant with Sicilian flavors serving an excellent lunch. Located in a charming greenhouse courtyard.

 – The best supermarket in the world if you ask me. Incredible fresh produce counters and top-quality Italian delicacies.

 – An old, charming restaurant with truly great pasta.

 with luxury boutiques like Prada, Gucci and Hermès.

 – Prada’s own restaurant offering classic Italian elegance. Perfect for a calm break despite being in the middle of the tourist district. (Book in advance!)

 – A peaceful green oasis in the city. Sit by the fountain in front of Palazzo Dugnani and simply enjoy the moment.

 3 hours by train from Milan to Riomaggiore (book via the Omio app).

Swimming from the rocky beach and harbor.

Only 10 minutes by train from Riomaggiore.

We spent a full beach day with both breakfast and lunch at the beach restaurant 

. For lunch, pesto pasta was a must – pesto originates from the Liguria region.

Before heading back, we stopped in the village for a refreshing gelato at 

 – A cozy courtyard setting and fantastic Italian food. A must-order is their selection of cured meats. “Il Salumaio” literally means “the delicatessen”.

Day 6 – Lake Garda & Desenzano del Garda

 If you have the energy (which we didn’t!), take the boat to 

 – a beautiful historic fortress with stunning views.

 – Famous for their filled brioche. Though I still think 

 – A museum set inside a beautifully preserved villa featuring Milan’s first private swimming pool. (The movie 

 – Italian takeaway dishes. I highly recommend the risotto alla milanese and their gigantic fresh mozzarella.

, where the entire street turns into a party in the evening.

Milan is the perfect base for exploring northern Italy. The city combines metropolitan energy with easy access to some of Italy’s most iconic destinations. Within just a few hours by train, you can reach both coastline and lakes.

It’s ideal for travelers who want to mix culture and shopping with nature and swimming – all in one unforgettable trip.
