The Josefov neighborhood, the former Jewish ghetto of Prague, is one of the most historically significant and moving areas of the city, home to six synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery, and the Jewish Museum, which together constitute one of the most important collections of Jewish history and culture in the world. The Old Jewish Cemetery, where thousands of graves are layered on top of each other in a small space over several centuries, is one of the most extraordinary and haunting places in Prague. Charles Bridge is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric bridges in the world, a 14th-century stone crossing over the Vltava lined with 30 Baroque statues of saints and offering extraordinary views in both directions over the river, the castle, and the surrounding rooftops. In summer the bridge is busy throughout the day with musicians, artists, and visitors from across the world, but the early morning hours before 8am offer a more peaceful and magical experience, with the mist rising from the river and the castle glowing in the soft morning light. Walking the bridge at both ends of the day gives you two completely different and equally beautiful perspectives.

3. Explore the Old Town and the Astronomical Clock

The Old Town Square is the beating heart of historic Prague, one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Europe and the setting for the famous Astronomical Clock, the Orloj, which has been marking the hours with its extraordinary mechanical procession of apostles since 1410. In summer the square is at its most lively and vibrant, with outdoor café terraces, street musicians, and the constant flow of visitors creating a wonderfully animated atmosphere. Climb the Old Town Hall tower for a panoramic view over the square and the surrounding Gothic rooftops, and take time to explore the surrounding streets of the Staré Město neighborhood, which reward slow and curious exploration in every direction.

The Malá Strana, or Lesser Town, nestled between the Vltava river and the castle hill, is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric neighborhoods in Prague and a perfect destination for a summer morning of leisurely exploration. The neighborhood's Baroque palaces, hidden garden courtyards, cobblestone lanes, and the magnificent Church of St. Nicholas create a setting of quiet, aristocratic elegance that feels entirely distinct from the busier energy of the Old Town across the river. The Wallenstein Garden, the Vrtba Garden, and the Vojan Gardens are among the most beautiful and peaceful outdoor spaces in the entire city, perfect for escaping the summer heat.

Vyšehrad is one of Prague's most beautiful and undervisited treasures, a historic fortress on a rocky promontory above the right bank of the Vltava to the south of the city center that offers some of the finest and most peaceful views over Prague and the river of any point in the city. The fortress complex contains the beautiful neo-Gothic Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, the remarkable Vyšehrad Cemetery where many of the greatest figures in Czech history and culture are buried, ancient Romanesque remains, and beautifully maintained gardens and parkland. In summer the gardens and ramparts are a wonderful spot for a picnic and an afternoon of quiet exploration away from the main tourist crowds.

The neighboring districts of Vinohrady and Žižkov, spread across the hills to the east of the city center, are two of Prague's most vibrant, creative, and enjoyable neighborhoods and an essential destination for visitors who want to experience a more local and contemporary side of the city. Vinohrady is elegant and residential, lined with beautiful Art Nouveau apartment buildings, excellent restaurants, wine bars, and boutique coffee shops. Žižkov is more rough-edged and bohemian, dominated by the iconic Television Tower and home to some of the finest and most characterful pubs and bars in Prague. Together they represent the best of Prague's neighborhood culture and are particularly enjoyable to explore on a warm summer evening.

9. Attend an Open-Air Concert or Festival

Prague's summer cultural calendar is one of the richest in Central Europe, with a full programme of open-air concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, and festivals running throughout June, July, and August. The Prague Proms festival brings classical and contemporary music to outdoor venues across the city, while the Colours of Ostrava and the United Islands of Prague festival offer wonderful world music and alternative programming. Free open-air concerts in the castle courtyards, the Wallenstein Garden, and the parks of the Malá Strana are a regular and wonderful feature of the summer calendar, and the atmosphere of listening to live music in such extraordinary historic settings is deeply memorable.

The Náplavka, the renovated riverside embankment on the right bank of the Vltava between the Palacký Bridge and the Jiráskův Bridge in Prague 2, is one of the most enjoyable and lively outdoor spaces in the city during the summer months. The embankment hosts a wonderful farmers market on Saturday mornings, a selection of permanently moored bar boats that fill with a young and convivial crowd on warm evenings, and a relaxed promenade atmosphere that makes it a perfect spot for a summer afternoon walk, a cold beer by the river, or a browse through the market stalls. The Náplavka has a wonderfully authentic and local character that feels refreshingly different from the more tourist-heavy areas of the city center.

11. Eat and Drink Your Way Through Prague

Prague's food and drink scene has evolved enormously in recent years and the city now offers a range of culinary experiences that goes well beyond the traditional Czech fare of svíčková, goulash, and roast pork, though all three remain deeply satisfying and worth seeking out at their best. The Náplavka farmers market is the best place to sample artisan Czech produce, while the restaurants of Vinohrady and Žižkov represent the city's most creative and contemporary cooking. The craft beer scene is outstanding, with Prague home to some of the finest small breweries in the country, and the traditional Czech pub, or hospoda, remains one of the most enjoyable and affordable social institutions in Europe.

The Mucha Museum in the Nové Město neighborhood is dedicated to the life and work of Alfons Mucha, the Czech artist who became one of the defining figures of the Art Nouveau movement and whose instantly recognizable decorative style, with its flowing lines, floral motifs, and idealized female figures, influenced art and design across the world. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of Mucha's paintings, drawings, photographs, and decorative objects, and provides a wonderfully intimate and inspiring introduction to one of the Czech Republic's greatest artists. The museum is small enough to visit in a focused hour or two and pairs beautifully with a walk through the Art Nouveau architecture of the surrounding Nové Město streets.
