Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Botticelli and Michelangelo all hang here in rooms you may have almost entirely to yourself.  are among the finest early Christian burial sites in southern Europe — a vast underground network of chambers lined with frescoes, mosaics and tombs dating from the 2nd century AD. The guided tour is run by a local social cooperative with passionate young guides and lasts about an hour. The ticket also includes access to the nearby Catacombs of San Gaudioso.

Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte & Catacombs of San Gennaro

 is the spiritual heart of the city — a cathedral built in the 13th century whose interior layers Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Gothic across one of the most dramatic naves in Italy. The Chapel of San Gennaro houses the relics of Naples' patron saint, and twice a year thousands gather to witness the liquefaction of his blood. Free entry; donations welcome.

 is the grandest public space in Naples — a vast neoclassical square flanked by the Royal Palace on one side and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola on the other. 8. Climb Castel Sant'Elmo for a 360° View

 is a star-shaped medieval fortress perched on the Vomero hill and offers the most complete panorama in Naples — a full 360° sweep taking in Vesuvius, the gulf, the islands and the entire historic centre. Entry costs just €2.50, reached easily by funicular, and at sunset the city turns gold in every direction.

Streets & Neighbourhoods — How to Read the City

 — "Naples splitter" — is the ancient arrow-straight street that bisects the historic centre. Walking it from east to west takes you past churches, street food vendors, laundry strung between balconies, Maradona murals, artisan workshops and some of the densest human energy in Europe. Don't rush it — the point is to get lost in it.

Naples after dark is a different city — louder, more generous and more alive than most European capitals manage at their best. The centro storico around

Beyond the City — Essential Day Trips from Naples

Pompeii is 30 minutes from Naples by the Circumvesuviana train and is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites on earth. The Roman city, frozen in ash by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, preserves streets, houses, frescoes and even the shapes of its victims with haunting completeness. 19. Visit Herculaneum — Pompeii's Quieter Rival

Most visitors go to Pompeii — which means 

, just 20 minutes from Naples by train, is significantly less crowded and arguably more impressive. Buried by the same 79 AD eruption, the ash preserved it at a deeper level — wooden furniture, food in jars, intact upper floors and vivid frescoes that Pompeii simply can't match. Smaller and easier to cover in half a day, it's the insider alternative that many archaeologists prefer.

 The historic centre is cobblestoned and hilly. Comfortable walking shoes are not optional. Pompeii in particular requires solid footwear.
