A few days prior, my wife was walking by Tropical Tribe, on her way to pick up a cup of coffee. Noticed the massive açaí bowls coming out of the place, so a few days later, she mentioned going there for breakfast which I thought was a great idea because it was on my list of quick eats to check out in Honolulu. We arrived at about 7:15AM with only one person in line in front of us. We had our hearts set on a good old-fashioned açaí bowl so we decided on the tropical bowl. Just before we checked out we noticed a warmer filled with little wonderful pao de queijo’s ready to be eaten. Then we realized that they’re sold their fresh until they sell out. We had no choice, but to buy a few of them, which were amazingly fluffy, warm, and most of all. cheesy. Our bowl was the perfect quick breakfast, and was large enough for the three of us to share. We were so thankful that this açai bowl spot was a short walking distance from our resort. It made the trip even more worth it. As we left, there was a line of 12 people behind us, so if you’re going to visit, visit early.

As a former employee, I feel compelled to speak out about the appalling conditions and exploitative practices under the ownership of this establishment. The owner consistently treats workers with a blatant disregard for fairness and respect. Let me shed some light on the disturbing reality behind the scenes. The bananas used for the açaí bowls were often riddled with fruit flies and well past their prime, bordering on rotten. While cutting fruit, I frequently encountered baby cockroaches crawling across the same cutting boards used to prepare customer orders. At the Waikiki location, it was not uncommon to find cockroaches in the granola served to customers. My colleagues and I were constantly bitten by unidentified insects, a matter that was met with utter indifference by the owner. Rather than taking meaningful action, such as hiring professional pest control, the only 'solution' offered was to place ineffective traps in what was clearly a cockroach-infested store.

Equally troubling was the owner's treatment of staff. Many of us were terminated without warning or legitimate explanation, with dismissals based on absurd and unfounded excuses. Despite the owner's cavalier suggestion that finding new employment would be easy, the reality of the job market in Hawaii tells a different story. Such an environment is not only unprofessional but potentially hazardous to both employees and customers alike.

Food wise they really deserve five star,  best açaí bowl for me in Honolulu. However customer service first time they deserve a one star, stand there for five minutes, two staff a lady and a guy just talking to each other, no one wants takes the order.. I was shocked. Second time I went back for the food, the guy was super nice. I guess it depends on who’s working, but still, the first time experience was not something I would like to experience.

So glad that we found this place for breakfast! The service could not have been friendlier! And the bowls!! So so so good! I have a weird cinnamon allergy so it’s hard to get granola most places. Here it was no problem! Perfect breakfast. Fresh fruit. Tasty coconut and perfect combination of ingredients. And the latte is good too! We’ll be back!
