창덕궁의 정전인 인정전의 정문으로 태종대에 창덕궁 건립 시 다른 건물들과 함께 조성되었다. 임진왜란 때 불탄 것을 광해군이 다시 조성했으며 조선 후기 효종·현종·숙종·영조 등의 여러 임금이 이곳에서 즉위식을 거행했다. 일제 때 전시관으로 쓰겠다는 이유로 주위 월랑과 함께 실내공간으로 개조 되었다가 원래의 모습으로 복원되었다.
