Egg coffee (cà phê trứng) was created in the 1940s when milk was scarce. Instead of milk, baristas whisked egg yolk with sugar and condensed milk into a thick, airy cream poured over strong Vietnamese coffee.

The result tastes almost like liquid tiramisu – rich espresso at the bottom and sweet custard foam on top.

Cafe Giang – The Birthplace of Egg Coffee

 is the original home of egg coffee, founded in 1946. Hidden down a narrow alley in the Old Quarter, this legendary café is a must-visit.

The egg coffee here is thick, creamy and slightly bitter – the most traditional version you can find in Hanoi.
