4. Take the Ferry to the Princes' Islands

The Princes' Islands, a cluster of nine car-free islands in the Sea of Marmara just a short ferry ride from the Eminönü waterfront, are one of Istanbul's most delightful and popular summer escapes. The largest island, Büyükada, is particularly lovely, with its grand Victorian-era wooden villas, horse-drawn carriages, quiet beaches, and excellent seafood restaurants offering a wonderfully peaceful contrast to the energy of the city. A hammam visit is one of the most relaxing and culturally immersive experiences Istanbul has to offer, and the city has dozens of historic bathhouses to choose from. The 16th-century Cemberlitas Hammam in Sultanahmet and the magnificently restored Kılıç Ali Paşa Hammam in Karaköy are among the finest and most atmospheric. The experience typically involves a steam session on a heated marble slab, a vigorous full-body scrub, and a soap foam massage that leaves you feeling deeply refreshed and genuinely revitalized. In the heat of an Istanbul summer, there are few more restorative and pleasurable ways to spend a couple of hours.

One of the most exhilarating and effortless things you can do in Istanbul is cross from Europe to Asia on one of the regular Bosphorus ferries. The Asian districts of Kadıköy and Üsküdar offer a completely different and deeply rewarding perspective on the city, with a more local, residential atmosphere, excellent street food, thriving cafe and restaurant scenes, and a pace of life that feels distinct from the more tourist-facing European side. 10. Visit the Spice Bazaar and Explore Eminönü

The Spice Bazaar, or Egyptian Bazaar, in the Eminönü district is a smaller and more manageable alternative to the Grand Bazaar and a feast for the senses in its own right. The air inside is thick with the fragrance of saffron, cumin, dried herbs, and lokum, and the stalls overflow with colorful mounds of spices, teas, nuts, and dried fruits. The surrounding Eminönü waterfront is equally lively and enjoyable, with the Galata Bridge fishermen, the balik ekmek fish sandwich boats, the ferries departing for the Bosphorus and the islands, and the magnificent New Mosque all combining to create one of the most atmospheric and energetic public spaces in the city.
