We tried The Walnut for the first time for a celebration dinner, and it exceeded our expectations. The restaurant is small but cosy and intimate, perfect for a date night.

The service was impeccable, and the food was absolutely divine—there wasn’t a single thing to fault. It felt like a fine dining experience at a very reasonable price, with generous portion sizes.

We left completely satisfied and excited to return. I absolutely adored this restaurant!

The Walnut is an intimate dining spot with only seven tables: four set for four, two for two, and one for three diners. The green walls with wood panel strips give it a rustic charm, paired with painted white tabletops and a minimalist interior that feels functional rather than luxurious. At the far end, there’s a bar that leads to the kitchen on one side and the bathrooms on the other, though the ward seating near the bar slightly obstructs access to these areas.

Limited menu of three items on starters, mains and desert but great dishes and do them all so well.

Starters of Lamb Ravioli: A standout dish. Perfectly cooked ravioli accompanied by couscous and nuts, creating a rich and satisfying combination.
Starter of Fish Cake: Generous in size, with a delightfully crisp exterior. Simple but well-executed.
Mains of Coley Fish: Exceptional. Served with a beautifully balanced sauce, celeriac half-balls, hazelnuts, and tender broccoli stems – a well-thought-out dish with great texture and flavor.
Mains of Beef Shin Pastry: Another highlight. The beef was tender and flavorful, encased in pastry, with an artfully arranged ring of vegetables. The pearl onions were a particular delight.
Dessert: The whipped chocolate with Italian meringue was a satisfying way to end the meal – light and indulgent without being overly sweet.

The Margarita fell short – weak, watered down, and lacking flavor.
The Old Fashioned, on the other hand, was much better and highly recommended. The cocktails fell short of the value for money mark.

The staff were attentive and friendly, adding to the overall experience. However, the 12.5% service charge felt steep, especially as it aligns more with London prices than Edinburgh norms.

The Walnut delivers on its food with standout dishes like the coley fish and lamb ravioli, but there’s room for improvement in the drinks and layout. Despite the minimalist decor, the food more than makes up for it, making it a worthwhile visit for those in search of excellent flavors in an unpretentious setting.

Absolutely quality food at very reasonable prices. A gem of a restaurant on leith walk, definitely a new go-to for us. The lady that served us was also fantastic, she did the whole place herself and we never once felt in need. Lastly the walnut desert was phenomenal! Top quality.

Best restaurant in Edinburgh hands-down. Book well in advance but you MUST go here! Food is perfection and Ilaria is so welcoming and lovely, made the evening so enjoyable. Make sure to get the walnut whip.  Thank you!

Hands down one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh. Gorgeous but unpretentious food, attentive and friendly but not intrusive service, and shockingly good value for money for the quality. I can't recommend it highly enough
