Beautiful and quiet enclave in the middle of busy Amsterdam. The Begijnhof was established in the 14th century by charitable Catholic women who did not want to join a monastery but wanted to live close together  in a somewhat communal living arrangement. The protestant Reformation changed everything since the Protestant city government of Amsterdam forbade the Catholic liturgy (in public places). Nevertheless, Begijns continued it clandestinely. Their original church was given to the English (Anglican) community as a gift by the city at the beginning of the 17th century.  The church is open to visitors and is well worth a little visit. The "secret" Catholic place of worship can be found  right across from the English church and now is a richly decorated chapel.

A small, historic courtyard in Amsterdam. It is pretty with a few sculptures dotted around. Entry is free.
You are expected to be quiet and respectful as people still live in the properties. You are, also, expected to stay on the open path that wanders through the site. Other paths are only accessible to residents.
There are two small churches, but a service was occurring, so I did not visit them.
The place is not that big and only took fifteen minutes to visit. I went thirty minutes before closing and was able to walk straight in.
It was nice enough and worth a visit if you are passing, but not worth a special trip

Here’s a peaceful and tranquil spot where you can escape the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam’s busy streets. We had to wait in line for about 5-10 minutes to enter. Admission is free. It’s recommended to dress modestly and respectfully when entering. Visitors are kindly asked to remain silent inside. You can complete your visit in about 5-10 minutes.
