Sultan Ahmet, also known as Sultan Ahmed I, was the Ottoman Sultan from 1603 to 1617. Born on April 18, 1590, in Manisa, Ottoman Empire, he ascended to the throne at the young age of thirteen after the death of his father, Sultan Mehmed III. His reign was marked by significant events and contributions, including the construction of the famous Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) in Istanbul.

One of the most notable aspects of Sultan Ahmet's reign was his decision to break with the Ottoman tradition of royal fratricide. Unlike his predecessors, he did not order the execution of his brother Mustafa upon ascending the throne Instead, Mustafa was sent to live in the old palace at Bayezit. This decision was likely influenced by his young age and the need to ensure the continuity of the dynasty.

While its exterior may seem unassuming, nestled modestly near the German Fountain and just steps away from both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, the true beauty of this site unfolds within.

Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by an interior adorned with exquisite floral tiles and delicate glass windows that cast a soft, reverent light over the resting place of Sultan Ahmed and his relatives. The tomb (on a Turkish turbe) of Sultan Ahmet I, the great patron of the Blue Mosque, is located next to the mosque itself on the north side of the mosque towards Sultanahmet Park. Ahmet, who ascended the imperial throne at the age of 13, died in 1617 at the age of only 27; its turbe was built between 1617 and 1619 and, like the mosque, contains fine İznik tiles. Buried with Ahmet are his wife, Kösem, who was strangled to death in the Topkapı harem, and his sons, Sultan Osman II (reigned 1618–22), Sultan Murat IV (reigned 1623–40), and Prince Beyazıt (killed by the Order of Murat). .

This was an unexpected surprise and I enjoyed walking through the tomb. It was free to visit and I had never seen a tomb like this. Worth the stop.
