Nestled in the vibrant heart of Paris at 7 rue du Faubourg Montmartre, Bouillon Chartier offers an authentic taste of traditional French cuisine in a lively, bustling setting. The moment you step inside, you're transported to a bygone era with its ornate mirrors, sculpted wood surfaces, and the energetic hum of friendly waitstaff dressed in traditional attire.

Signature highlights include their succulent duck confit, tender beef bourguignon, and the irresistible escargots, prepared with garlic and butter, offering a true taste of France. The dishes are served with generous portions, rich flavors, and a touch of history that makes each meal memorable.

We got here close to 7pm and there was a crazy line all the way to the corner of the street. The line moved relatively quickly for how many people there were and it took about 25 minutes for us to get in. They sell merch (cups, post cards, etc) in the line along with sangria for 1€ and the sangria was pretty sweet, but I enjoyed it.

The inside has two floors and is incredibly loud and crowded and you will likely share a table with other people. Each waiter is serving multiple groups of people, so your wait time for ordering and having your food and check delivered depends on how busy they are.

Our food came pretty quickly after ordering. We ordered the veal rice and duck confit along with mixed salads. The portions were enough to get us full and the veal was tender and the sauce was delicious. The duck confit was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The complementary bread was perfectly crispy outside and soft inside also!

Our meal total was about 24,50 €, which is quite affordable! When we left (around 8:30), the line was even longer than when we had joined it. Highly recommend this place for a yummy and cheap meal if you are willing to wait in the line and don't mind sharing a table (and water/bread) with strangers!

I like this place but I have to say I dislike that they are trying to make foreigners to pay tips. I am French and they never presented me with tips options. Why? Cause the tips are included in the price just like the taxes are all included in the price. 

If you come here make sure you don't get scammed for tips. Especially if you pay by cards. They will try to make you pay tips options just say no tips or denied the tips on the payment options machine. 


Also a tip for the food. This is brasserie type of food. Take their beef or duck options. Don't take their chicken or sausages. They are terrible in general. Also their appetizers are bad besides the escargots. Their desserts are bad too, only ice cream is good. You can get any better desserts at any pattiserie or boulangerie in Paris on the street.

This place was recommended on a lot of forums cheap and traditional French food. The space was really huge and when we went it was not that busy with many empty tables so I was shocked when they seated us on a 4 top next to another pair of diners. We had to share a basket of bread and also be squished next to them which wasn't the best situation. Service was a bit hectic but we ordered leeks with dressing and escargot as our appetizer and duck confit and pork chop with a side green beans as our mains.

The leeks with dressing were interesting and the dressing was surprisingly good with the flavor of mustard and vinegar. The escargot were super tasty and garlicky and we wished we had ordered more than 6. The duck confit was tender but I wish the dish was more seasoned as the potatoes were plain and all I tasted really was salt. My sister said the pork chop was average and could've been more tender. The side of green beans looked like they could have come from a can but were decently seasoned. The profiterole dessert was not bad but the chocolate sauce was a bit bitter. This place is good value but the taste was pretty underwhelming and I'd suggest other Bouillons over this one.

Meals in Paris doesn't have to be expensive! For a decent meal and a great price, Bouillon restaurants are the answer! Some will take reservations ahead of time, but if you only have a party of 2, it will be fairly easy to grab a table for a short wait! 
We tried to go to 2 Bouillons, this one was the first one. Our waiter was a sweet and friendly gentleman. The food was filling and good for the price, I would definitely come back.

I don't think I would come here again. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. We waited about 20 minutes in line to get sat. The service was kind, a little slow but that's the culture. They want you to take your time and not feel rushed.
We got the order of snails, I liked it. It was my favorite compared to other places. They were bigger and had good buttery flavor. The mushrooms weren't my favorite item. They lacked flavor. I got the Steak frites with mushroom sauce. I ordered the steak medium but it came out almost rare/med rare so i didn't finish it. The fries were good though. I liked the Beef Bourguignon with pasta tho.

Less gluten free options then the other, food was very mediocre, staff was not pleasant. Cute inside but not worth it.

When you are in Paris there are many things to do. Many visitors try for the ultimate in high end restaurants. Places with long lines and high prices. They expect a certain level in food, variety and what is available. We have all done that. But sometimes it is smart to have a recommendation or two from someone who does live in Paris. They will see what you want and make the recommendations of places they will go to for dinner. They will know of the tourists but still recommend what is typical for even someone who lives there. It is typical French cooking in a very typical way.

This is Bouillon Chartier. 

The Bouillon Chartier embodies a singular spirit, and the history of a unique dining craft. Waiters dressed in black rondin jackets and crisp white aprons waltz among the tables serving classic French dishes to everyone no matter who you are. They will serve the food. You need to accept something very traditional and common amongst the French. It is truly classic.

Our friend who grew up in Paris recommended we come here to the location on the Grand Boulevards. This is the first of the restaurants and dates to the time. The tables are close together. People of two can sit at a table for 4 with another couple already there. The place is packed and moving fast. The waiters will give you the menu and provide water if required. If you need a cocktail or bottle of wine, they will bring that to you quickly. And, in France, a bottle of wine is typical for dinner.

As we look over the menu we know instantly what we want to have even before we entered through the doors. The waiter came back and took the order on the table cloth covering our spot. This way we know, and he knows, what we will have.

Placing our order we had to wait. But it does not take long with the waiters, the team and the crowd of guests. This is French dining as it was for a long time. This is not fine-dining. This is the dinner everyone would have at home or in a local place.

For us, the bottle of red wine was brought to the table and we poured a glass. Bread was also placed next to us. Finally, out came the appetizer. In this case we ordered a true classic. The Escargot. These are the edible snails which are a popular French delicacy. They are often served as an appetizer, typically prepared with garlic and butter. The shells are often kept with the snails for serving, and specialized tools like snail tongs and forks are used for eating. 

With fork in hand, and the tweezer to hold the shell it was time to take out the snail. Cooked perfectly, it was covered with butter and garlic. It took no time to eat 6 of these. They were large and tasty. Of course, the best part, is when you break the bread up and dip it into the remaining butter and garlic. This is what it truly is about. The taste, aroma, the fragrance, the touch is ideal with each bite. Even one of the snails is finished. This reminds you of Escargot. It is very typical of France.

Once complete, we had to wait for the next course.

First up was a true classic again. This was the Beef Bourguignon. Very much what to expect when stepping into a local place. My mother use to make this, so I always knew what to expect. It is made with beef, bacon lardons, carrots, onions and mushrooms slowly cooked in a rich red wine sauce. The beef is soft and perfect., The flavor is ideal. The taste is what to expect. This came with a dish of noodles on the side that are used for dipping the beef covered with the sauce into. It is a great combination to enjoy.

Next we also had the Duck confit. This is using duck that is cooked slowly for a long period of time, thanks to the protective, air-blocking seal formed by the rendered fat that the duck is submerged and cooked in. The duck is soft, tender and moist. It is served with small potatoes and fresh string beans and is very typical. Again, a classic meal to enjoy with a glass of wine and some more bread.

The dessert of choice was again very traditional.  French Rice Pudding, It is a creamy French classic rice pudding recipe made on the stovetop and is the perfect dessert with crunchy almond topping. There was also a touch of vanilla for extra taste. And to make it better, this was placed over a sliced piece of lemon cake to enrich the flavor. It is rich, creamy, tasty and different.

The Bouillon stands for traditional, simple and hearty cuisine, made possible by quality producers and artisans. This is an immense dining room with its brightly lit mirrors, hanging chandeliers, surfaces in sculpted wood and gleaming copper, and even the rack of little drawers where regulars would keep their napkins back in the old days. 

The team at Bouillon Chartier is professional. They know what to do. They know what to do. Move fast. And listen to what you have to say or request. The cooks are at the top of the grade knowing how to cook in the classic style with the traditional recipes. This is truly Paris as we know.

Stopped by for an early dinner around 4:30pm on a weeknight. There was no wait and plenty of empty tables, however, we were told to share a table with another pair. This didn't make sense because other tables had two people per table, it wasn't busy, and there were many other tables available. This experience was uncomfortable and made it hard to enjoy the meal. 

We came for the cheap escargot and also ordered the dunk confit entree. The escargot was delicious with the side of bread & the duck confit tasted bland. Overall the food was affordable but tasted just okay and service was disappointing.

Came here around 8pm on a Wednesday and there was a line out the door. In the middle of the line there's a lady selling sangria though, so that's a bonus 
When we finally got in after around 20 minutes, we were sat at the same table as others as a group of 2. They do have English menus available if you're more comfortable with that. We got a number of dishes to try, including the herring, the duck confit, the chicken, a side of mushrooms, as well as the profiteroles and creme caramel for dessert. The food came out fast once we ordered, but it took a long time to wait for our server since he was in charge of nearly 20 tables and clearly overwhelmed. The food was good and affordable, and it felt like a simple and classic spot. 
It was pretty chaotic and noisy inside, but the restaurant is packed to the brim with guests so it's understandable. 
I would probably come back if there was no line and quicker service!

While in Paris on vacation, my wife and I and our two small dogs went to Bouillon Chartier for lunch. The place is well known, it's all drop-in (no reservations)

When we went there was a long line. Luckily when we went there wasn't a long wait in line because they seated smaller parties first. 

There seems to be one wide open dining room with a several servers which handle different sectors of tables. Our server got us an English menu and took down our order on plastic table cloth (there was nothing written down or entered into an electronic system)

In my observation, it seems as though the servers go to the kitchen to get items and bring them to a reception desk where they scan a card and someone at the desk I'm guessing does some internal tallying. I'm guessing some items take longer than others but we had a duck confit, a side salad and an order of 12 snails/escargot.

The duck confit was very flavorful as were the escargot which went really well with the bread they provided. I've had escargot before but nothing as fresh as this before.

We didn't order too much because we had a lot of eating on the trip. We had room for dessert and had the rice pudding and egg custard with caramel. 

They serve a lot of people during the lunch rush, turning around the tables multiple times. I appreciated the service we got from our server. 

As places in Paris go, the prices were reasonable and it sounded like this place prices itself in being available to most people and residents, and not just something exclusive to the rich or tourists.
