If you're a fan of the Marylebone La Fromagerie but find it a bit too busy at times then it's well worth paying a trip to Highbury and seeking out this smaller store. The 'cheese maturing cellar' stocks every cheese you could possibly imagine and stores them at various levels of smelliness depending on your own personal tastes. It is truly a homage to fromage! 

For the sweet tooth's out there La Fromagerie also has a sizeable selection of cakes and pastries. By the shop window there are a couple of tables which are perfect for sitting down with a cup of tea and choosing one of these delicious treats to nibble on. Or if you're feeling extra extravagant then try one of their Valrhona hot chocolates- though beware, these are only for true chocoholics and pack a a fairly bitter punch. 

I would recommend this shop to anyone looking for a really high quality deli. The food isn't cheap but the quality is fantastic.

My neighbourhood cheese shop is called La Fromagerie and it's so much more than a cheese shop.  Now, I only go to La Fromagerie for the cheese and today I purchased brie with truffles that is delicious.  What I love about this shop is that the staff is helpful and friendly and offers lots of suggestions when you are buying cheese, Caroline really knows her stuff.  Whenever I go into the shop I feel a bit overwhelmed because I'm never exactly sure what I want, I love that I can tell them what I like and they have several selections instantly in mind. 

When I say that La Fromagerie is more than a cheese shop it means they sell other things.  You can pick up a dessert or order a cappuccino.  They even have a few tables to sit and enjoy a drink and if you love the smell of cheese you will certainly enjoy that.  The shop isn't very big and it doesn't take many people before it starts to feel crowded.  Despite that, it's a warm environment and I don't mind wiggling around a few folks as I happily exit the shop with my purchases.

La Fromagerie is part of a small chain of specialist cheese shops in London catering to the gentrified area of Highbury. As one would hope there is an strong range of good quality cheese sourced from Italy, France and the UK. Additionally, they also sell various oils, conserves, breads, biscuits and cakes. Everything I have bought from here has been of a wonderful quality and there are usually things that you may not have heard of, or tried, before.

The staff are very knowledgeable and happy to help and give advice on the produce. This is particularly useful when you are picking something up for a dinner party or just want to try something new. Additionally, this is apparently Guardian food writer, Nigel Slater's favourite cheese shop.

one BIG world of CHEESE! It is quite simply cheese heaven. I like it because I like cheese. And in this I am rather unoriginal and far from being alone. Which is why this is just one of the two La Fromageries in London, the mother ship of cheese my friends is in Marylebone. I prefer this one. It's more intimate, more. mmm, what's the word- more real. Less fickle if ou know what I mean. You feel you are likely to bump into Jamie or Nigella and god damn, there isn't that table full of diners or the baskets or Romanesco Ca-broccoli to distract you from getting to the point of the whole thing and diving into the cheese Fridge. And from this cheese fridge you will emerge some £60 lighter and reeking of the fruits of the labours of those marvellous, extraordinary cheesy bactirium(sss) but in absolute cheesy bliss.

This is one of the best cheese shops in London beaten only by the other shop by the same name and management located on Marylebone High Street!


 The shop is laden with cheeses of all varieties and origins and is always a great experience for the cheese addict. The staff are really knowledgeable and are able to offer their expertise so even if you don't know much (a bit like me) than you don't have to feel embarrassed. Unlike the Marylebone store it isn't packed at weekends; almost as if the local residents don't know how good they have it.


 If you can't find it just follow your nose - you can smell it from about 20 metres away.

Most of the time, La Fromagerie is just a place to get a great selection of cheeses. On "Fondue Friday" it becomes a sit-down dining experience, with cheese plates from Italy, Spain, and France, as well as their delectable Fondue Savoyarde. Book a table, it's absolutely magnificent.

There are few things on the planet that make me as happy as cheese, so I'll start by saying that a business considered "the best cheese shop in England" is more than likely going to receive 5-stars out of principle. 

But my dear heavenly cheese, this tiny shop doesn't stop there, but goes on to make maddeningly good savory tarts, homemade granola (what up Oregon!), soups, bread, cured meats ... shall I go on? There is only seating space for 6 people, but if you are lucky enough to snag a table you'll be the envy of all Highbury for those precious, precious moments of cheese-devotion. 

Basically, if you can't make it to Borough market over the weekend fear not because you can find it all under one roof at La Fromagerie. Plus, the French-speaking staff is a sexy touch, adding additional pleasure to the already orgasmically delicious nibbles. 

Go. Just go.

I heard about La Fromagerie from my night out at Gordon Ramsay. When talking to them about their amazing cheese, they mentioned that (at least at the time) they were getting it from La Fromagerie. 

So I looked them up. I found out that it would clearly be a better plan to go to this one due to its proximity to where we live. (The train takes us right to Finsbury Park.) We had some plans in London that day, so we ran some errands and decided to hit them up on the way home.

Okay so the partner loves cheese. I mean, I love cheese too, but he's a bonafide cheese snob. I think it comes from being stuck in the United States for four years with our crappy orange Cheddar cheese and our even more crappy orange American cheese (it's basically some sort of processed cheese usually sold pre-sliced, although it does bring back fond memories of the american "grilled cheese sandwich" and tomato soup from my childhood). He was in absolute heaven. Once we found it (which surprisingly was right next door to another shop that sells cheese), we went in. It was a hot day, and going into the cheese room was a pleasant surprise as it is kept quite cool for the cheese. 

And the cheese! What can I say except there was shelf after shelf after shelf of cheese. It's probably the most amount of cheese I've seen in one place. And it all looked heavenly. I think we ended up with six or seven different types that we took home and had. It was a bit extravagant, but with all that cheese staring at us, what else could we do?

Highly recommend for cheese. I don't know about anything else, but all the other baked goods inside looked delicious as well. I was trying to get the partner's attention to see if he wanted any, but he was so focused on buying cheese, it just didn't work. Maybe next time. A great place to go to get cheese for a party! (Except i was told that we shouldn't waste such good cheese on party guests, so I imagine we'll just go here for cheese for ourselves.)

I felt so lucky when I moved into my new house to find that La Fromagerie was within easy walk.  I had heard about it on the grapevine but had never visited.  Had I done so, it would have been another good reason to move into the area.  The shop is split into two.  At the front is a couple of small tables (for coffee/snacks/cheese plates) and a more generic delicatessen (although the cakes are universally fabulous).  

However, the back is where the action is - a dedicated cheese room.  It contains what seems to be all the cheeses which are made in the world.  Obviously this can't be true - however, it does feel like all the cheeses that are worth eating are located here.  The staff knowledgably guide those who are bewildered by the wide selection or introduce the more seasoned cheese voyagers to something new.  Needless to say, I always seem to end up buying far more than I could possibly consume.  However, this doesn't stop me coming back for more.

I go in weekly for fondue cheese (my kids beg for it, and they scarf down raw veggies, so who am I to complain) which has become a bit of a joke. :)

I'm not sure of his name, but the very tall guy with glasses is just wonderful, as is the young French gentleman with glasses. He is very knowledgeable about what's available, is more than happy to give samples, and even offered several to my daughters, which I thought was so nice; kids are so often regarded as a nuisance, but he is really kind to them.

Stinky, cheesy perfection. Good stinky, by the way. :)
