I had high expectations for this restaurant based on all the great reviews, but unfortunately, my experience didn’t live up to the hype - especially since it was my birthday. After being seated, we waited almost 10 minutes before anyone even brought me a menu, which set the tone for the rest of the service - slow and inattentive.

The food itself was decent. The portion sizes were small but quite filling, so no complaints there. However, the overall experience was a complete letdown. I expected at least decent service, but it felt like an afterthought. For a special occasion, this was disappointing.

I finally got around to trying Bao Down last Friday after having it on my list for ages. While I wasn’t completely blown away, I enjoyed the experience overall. The food was a mix of hits and misses, but the vibe and atmosphere were fantastic. It is relaxed, fun, and perfect for a casual night out.

Yellowtail Sashimi
Fresh and creamy with ponzu dressing, citrus segments, and pickled daikon and ginger for some brightness. It came in a light coconut cream sauce that gave it a silky texture, but it lacked the bold punch I was hoping for.

Spicy Prawn Skewers
This was a highlight! The prawns were perfectly cooked, coated in a sweet marinade, and paired beautifully with lime and coriander paste. The bao that came with it was soft and fluffy, and the fresh cucumber slice added a nice crunch. Simple and well-executed.

Prawn Toast
Unfortunately, this one didn’t do it for me. The deep-fried bao with prawn filling felt overly heavy, and the lemon mayo on the side added to the richness in a way that was a bit overwhelming. The soy dressing helped balance it out, but I had to ask for extra to really cut through the oiliness.

Beef Tataki
Beautiful presentation, but the flavors fell short. The soy, lemon, and ginger dressing was far too salty, and the beef was slightly overcooked for my liking. On the bright side, the pickled jalapeños and radish were great. It was bright, tangy, and much-needed to lift the dish.

Slow Braised Hoisin Beef Short Rib Bao
This was the standout of the evening. The short rib was rich, tender, and full of flavor, paired perfectly with fluffy bao and a creamy Sichuan chili mayo. The pickled cucumber added a fresh, tangy contrast that balanced the richness. I’d order this again in a heartbeat.

Final Thoughts
Bao Down has a fantastic vibe, and their bao is truly excellent. It was soft, fluffy, and made with care. While I wasn’t completely wowed this time, I think I may have ordered the wrong mix of dishes. I’ve heard great things about their menu, so I’ll definitely be back to try other options.

If you’re visiting, I highly recommend the Hoisin Beef Short Rib Bao and the Spicy Prawn Skewers. Both were delicious and well worth the visit. I’m looking forward to giving it another go and hopefully discovering what makes this spot so beloved!

We had a great experience at bao down. The food was amazing, it was a unique taste experience! Definitely my favorite restaurant in Cape Town so far! :) And also the service team was great! :)
