I do a lot of research about food when I travel, but there is nothing more satisfying than discovering a place while you're walking. This morning, I strolled down Bermondsey Street for a Cold Brew when I noticed gorgeous pastries in the window at @comptoir_bakery . 

After re-fueling with caffeine, I returned to Comptoir and noticed that they had tasty looking Sausage Rolls, which are on my London Food Bingo Card. A Sausage Roll consists of seasoned sausage, surrounded by layers of puff pastry, baked until golden brown. Comptoir's had light and dark sesames on top. I often prefer savory pastries, and this still warm Sausage Roll was the perfect mix of seasoned sausage and satisfying flaky pastry shell. I don't know if I'll have other Sausage Rolls while I'm in London, but this one sets a high standard. 

My family is still asleep and haven't tried the other pastries and donuts I bought, but they look amazing. I had a sliver of chocolate pastry and it was delicious and flaky. Service was top rate too.

If you find yourself in London, @comptoir_bakery on Bermondsey has my high recommendation.

This is a review for the Bermondsey St location.

Adorable little bakery with a mouthwatering selection of pastries in the window. Right around the corner from our Airbnb. We waited in line and got a pistachio bun which was like a sweet brioche with a pale green custard filling and a delightful crust of pistachios on top. I got it take away for the train to Bath and could not resist and ate it right there on the street. 150 out of 100. Yum!

Tip: when you go an hour before closing you can get 3 pastries for £6 (normally £3 each). Loved the apple turnover. The doughnuts are made with a brioche bread and were tasty as well.

This review is solely based on the brownie I purchased from their stand at the Borough Market. Oh goodness gracious, it was such a delight. I shared a few bites with my fiancé but really wished I had more of it right now. 

I'm a fan of dark chocolate and I believe they used 72% cocoa for the brownies. Hands down one of the best brownies I've ever had. Only wish it was an edge piece because I (like many others) enjoy that crispy chewy crust. 

Crossing my fingers my fiancé wants to check out Borough market again tomorrow for lunch so we can get more sweet and savory eats!

Good bakery. I had a "Brionut" (Brioche + Donut I guess) with coffee ganache which I liked a lot although it wasn't cheap (GBP 3). Service is friendly and the place itself is quite cool.

The chocolate peanut butter tart was delicious but the chocolate cookie brownie was inedible hence the 3 stars, I'd love to try more offerings next time

Ducking out of The Table with plans to attend The Borough Market soon thwarted by a throng of early shoppers it was in a quick re-route that I found myself on Druid Street and although intending originally only to visit St. John Bakery my curiosity (and gluttony) could not help but stop by Comptoir Gourmand for a few bites en route.  Technically French in concept but covering a wide swath of styles as part of a growing chain providing supply to several cafes throughout the city it was admittedly with wide eyes that I approached the garage of sweet treats and although oddly chopped gummy macaron samples should have served warning when several other options appeared average at best a five part order soon took shape, the results ranging from a horrendous frangipane hot pocket dubbed an "almond croissant" to a stellar representation of the Aussie favorite Lamington with the rest otherwise forgettable save for the sheer size of the cookie.  Perhaps a victim of its own success or the product of an 'everything to everyone' approach suffice it to say that there is simply better pastry to be found throughout London although I obviously did not sample the lot even high volume kitchens like those at Harrod's and Fortnum & Mason seem to be putting out a superior product on the whole.

The coffee's better across the street (just sayin') but you can't beat the proper French pastries here at this cosy little eatery. In fact, I think Comptoir Gourmand and Fix Coffee should work out a nice little 'we bake/you brew' relationship.


 The folks behind the counter are friendly and efficient, the food's tasty (and honestly the coffee's fine) and the vibe is pleasant for a bit of a linger. Come warmer days, the few tables outside are ideal for people gawking on Whitecross street - catch the City schleppers in the am and the market goers during lunch.


 I'm liking this place more and more each time I visit.

Absolutely amazing Tartiflette. I would strongly recommend it. Chunks of potatoes and lardons drowned in reblochon cheese. What's not to love!

The croissant and ham were pretty standard, it's difficult to go wrong with that. However the macaroons they do are quite average. 

It does get quite crowded around lunch time, and getting a place to sit could get challenging, but then you dot go to Maltby Street to sit.

Fresh and delicious treats and friendly staff! A great assortment to choose from too. Highly recommend.
