I am one of those people who trust upon the people of yelp for good suggestions of places to eat and enjoy, yet one that hardly contributes to this community, except when I have a really good find with minimal reviews and PNY is one of those places. 

We came to PNY via a "local suggestion" by our Airbnb host. Little to our knowledge there are a few around the city but the one in the 10th was the one we ate at and am reviewing. Three things I like about a good restaurant is the food, the ambiance and the company (so obviously I'll be talking about 1 and 2). 

We had the California burger and the classic cheese burger, both very delicious. The beef was cooked to our desired temperature, the bread was less of a typical American bun and more of a soft hybrid with croissant-type softness. The rest of the toppings were fresh and crisp. Now to the ambiance- quaint place, with awesome "west coast" music mix in the background, and the servers were friendly, talkative and attentive, not to mention environmentally friendly with their plastic-free straws. In a nutshell, delicious burger/American food in a fun, not stuffy environment, definitely a place worth writing a good review on.

I totally underestimated how popular this place is. Causally suggesting that a friend and I meet here on a Thursday night turned into a fight-for-you-right-to-dine adventure full of visual candy, socio-cultural intrigue, and damn good burgers. 

Let's start with the crowd: 100% hipster, average age 26.5 and not a false stylistic note to be found anywhere in the establishment. Forget the clubs and bars, ladies and gents, if you want to attract the trendy crowd the magic formula is burgers with a New York spin on the Faubourg Saint Denis. 

It took a solid 30-minute wait at the bar before a server actually ejected two guys who had been nurturing their Duvals over a liesurely chat in order to seat us. 

The relaxed waiter understandably mocked us for having a hard time choosing between the three burgers on the menu. I went with the vintage cheeseburger, my friend for the california (a cheeseburger with avocado) coupled with loaded fries and a carafe of house wine. 

The food really hit the spot.The burger bun light and fluffy, the beef, nicely charred on the outside and tender and succulent on the inside, and the vintage cheese, SHARP, just the way it should be! The fries were a bit limp and skinny, not nearly as impressive as the burger but still nice. 

Overall, the experience was yummy and fun, if not a bit hectic and unpolished at the beginning and end (they screwed up our bill by a good extra 20E, and weren't the least bit apologetic about it, so be sure to check the bill carefully).

Napalm sriracha burger is my ultimate favourite and the fries were good too. 
This is my favourite burger joint in Paris and I have to say that I tried many ones before. First the service is super friendly so we feel welcomed and it adds to a perfect lunch break. Second the quality of the burger is  equal to the first time I tried like 2 years ago which is a guarantee of care about ingredients.
Their lemonade is not too sweet and they would be happy to add some syrup if you do care.
15 euros for a lunch with burger/fries/ drink it is a good deal.

We are Americans on holiday in Paris. This American style restaurant is featured in a book written by an American journalist. We were not disappointed. The burgers were moist and not over cooked. The buns tasted fresh. The mayo spread was delicious. Our fries were crispy, not greasy. All in all they satisfied our craving for a good American burger. The service was fast and friendly even though they were very busy. We highly recommend the PNY.

The best burger I ever had was the last burger I had. 

I literally made a right when I should have made a left. 

Leaving the Musee National Picasso (unimpressed btw, but that's a different review), I made a wrong turn on Rue Vielle du Temple. This might not mean much to you, but in the back streets of the Paris tenth arr...it means you're lost. At least I was. 

I've grown used to it. I see getting lost as an advantage not a hindrance. It's adventure I seek. I eat where my feet take me. 

I noticed a certain pop poster along many of the walls there in the 10th, advertising the Return of the Cowboy burger, and the restaurant Paris New York...I took note. 
After finding my way back to the Saint Paul metro line...this was on my mind, and I knew I'd be back. I'm a sucker for good pop (point of purchase material...advertising). 

Now, my friends back in the Aloha state all said I was crazy for wasting (as they put it) meals in Paris eating burgers, but I can smell a winner/loser a mile away. After some gentle coaxing, me and my crew were on the way...I just hoped I wouldn't get lost. 

Exiting the metro at Strasbourg Saint Denis make a right and walk till the road pitchforks, that's Rue du Fauborg Saint Demis, and PNY is just up the way on the right. Oddly enough, it right in the middle of a large Turkish/Middle Easter block of restaurants? 

 Dinner service starts at seven, and we got there a little early (figured I'd get lost, but I didn't, but that's the way with me?), which was good as we were first in before a throng of a wait line formed. 

Black and white interior, three diminutional cubic flooring, weathered concrete walls, stainless steel furnishing under Broadway style lighting. They show old French movies upstairs on the concrete wall! 
We had the Return of the Cowboy: (X3, this is what I wanted, but everyone else did also, go figure?) Le Ponciet (Brittany) beef and smoked pork belly with aged cheddar cheese, onion ring and their house made BBQ sauce, and the Smoky Bleu (Happy ME!): same meat mixture, Bleu Stilton cheese and house made onion jam, both €11.60.  Add in a couple orders of fries (€3.60, you can pass on these as I felt them seriously lacking!) and beers. 
The meat was so perfect, and perfectly cooked. Charred well on the outside (I did a little research on their cooking methods as I was so impressed!!!) and red, but not blood dripping inside. The creme de la creme (I've waited my whole life to use that!) of moister, color, flavor, juiciness all the while the bun retaining its constitution. They must dab that patty with butter before plating! Few times in my gastric life have I been so happy, and so proud. PNY is a must!! 
This is the wave of the near future...you gotta trust, I won't get you lost...at least not here. Cowboy UP!

Good food. The burgers were well proportioned and cooked with decency. The wine was very affordable and tasted well. It was a bit cozy in this restaurant but the waiters were very attentive.

I must apologize for the inaccuracies contained in the previous version of this review.

I was contacted by the owner who took issue with my initial review of PNY. Kudos to him for caring enough to not ignore negative reviews of his business. As such, I must amend some comments that I'd made...

While I had commented that the design and decor by Cut Architectures is beautiful and likely very expensive, I was told by the owner that it is actually quite cheap. I stand corrected.

I had also erroneously theorized that all the money was going into marketing and other bullshit. Apparently, I was wrong, because they are "putting everything in the plate" running the same food cost as a Michelin one-star. Again, I stand corrected.

Unfortunately, this means that the situation here is even worse than I had initially postulated: If all that money and effort are going into the dishes, the ball of unbalanced, lukewarm, poorly presented god-knows-what is the best this restaurant can offer?

In fact, it is: Said owner further admitted that the chef is young and sometimes not up to the task, and may well have fucked up and sent out some bad dishes, and that they'd be happy to have me back for another try.

I do still think the bun is excellent.

Coming from North America I feel I know what a good burger is so I'm kind of picky. Heard good reviews about pny and it's really just a standard non fast food burger. Not sure what the hype is all about. Why is it so popular on social media??  I think French people just don't know better. I had "the return of the cowboy" burger. So it has cheese, bacon, onions and BBQ sauce. The bun is crap. Also strangest thing is that people all used a fork n knife to eat their burger. WHAT r u doing!? Again French people haha. The fries were pretty good. the loaded fries r better and obv more fun. 

My advice is come to America and taste what a real burger should be like!

Ok, so I am having a hard time rating this place. I think it has everything it takes to be a five star spot (Yelp stars). But there were some (very fixable) factors that have led me to leave a lower review. I am hoping that when I come back - they will do what it takes to bring this place up to five starts and I think they can. Read on if you are intrigued. 

Before I get to my reasons for doubting this place - the saving grace for this restaurant came from the dessert tray. I was ready to leave 3 stars, but then I ate the cheese cake. BEST CHEESECAKE IN PARIS. Hands down. I would go here again just for that. (Made with Philadelphia Cream Cheese by the way - as is required to make a really good cheese cake - not crème fraîche). The cupcakes are pretty good - but they should talk to Sugar Daze for some tips if they want to take it up a notch. 

So, on to my review! The presentation of the storefront is creative and adds a nice touch. Inside, they have a nice collection of decorations and motifs with a cool lighting set up that gives it that old American dinner feel but with a modern twist. The atmosphere is nice and you don't have to worry about leaving smelling like a greasy kitchen rag (not easy for a burger place to pull off - especially in a small cafe). 

Also, they have great service and I mean really great - the staff are not at all your typical Parisian servers (that is to say they are nice, polite, and they are happy to respond to reasonable requests like changing what kind of cheese is in your burger). High five guys (and gals). 

Nice touch with their drinks - they serve them in mason jars. Plus they make a mean lemonade-style drink that is worth a shot. The burger options are simple but with a nice French touch that I think is quite essential for a burger place in Paris - I am not living here because I love American cheese on my burger and anyways I can find that at Mac Dough. Plus (listen up vegetarians) they have a portobello burger for those who can't handle beef ;D But for those of us who can, they have a double burger option (great if you are extra hungry) For the truly famished, you can ask them to bump up the does to a triple or EVEN quadruple burger - I watched this go down and it was pretty epic. 

The problem for me arises more from the temperature of the food. I have spoken to other people and they suggested that part of the issue could be that it is busy at lunch time so maybe I should stop in for dinner some day. Anyways, I think that it is a great idea to make shoe string fries and I applaud the effort. But they have to be hot! I think the coldness could be due to the little porcelain trays they serve them in - a nice touch for style - but the underlying metal transfers the cold directly into the fries. They should keep these plates hot and make sure they are not keeping "prepared fries" too long before serving them. In my not so humble opinion, they need to be coming out of the fry basket 2 minutes max before coming to the table. Also, the burger I got was not hot enough. I thought at first that maybe it was the bun not being toasted enough but I have had burgers on untoasted buns and been very happy. It could be again that making the plates hot would help things. But my ultimate feeling is that they just need an extra waiter or something - but I get the feeling that the food is not coming out of the kitchen fast enough after it is ready. 

CONCLUSION: Go here - order a double burger and ask that they toast the bun 3 times (one of the staff told me that when he eats a burger there he toasts his bun three times...so why not mine?!?!) Then, tell them it is important that your fries and food come out hot. Order a lemonade, but make sure you leave room for the cheesecake. Anyways, I will be going back!
