I gave Vortex a 5 stars for food, but it’s actually a jazz club. Maybe there’s food, I don’t know, but the real feast is for the ears - and what a feast it is! Delicious, experimental, curious, and utterly captivating. The service and atmosphere are equally impressive.

A bit of an institution in the London jazz scene. Quite a rarity to have a venue purely focused on Jazz music, in an era when even the mainstream music venues are struggling. Staffed by volunteers and jazz enthusiasts and housing some real greats and talents in the British jazz scene. Ticket prices are very reasonable for London and for the quality of the music. A nice building architecturally, that stands out in it’s Dalston neighbourhood. Lord knows how they managed to a grand piano up those stairs!

Would have to say that it is not the most comfortable venue. The night I attended was slightly over booked, so you had people standing in rows and craning at points for a good view. It does not have a good PA system, which for the purist probably doesn’t matter but the more discerning listener might notice.

If you love jazz and spot someone on the roster you admire, then this place is amazing. The more casual listener, looking for a wider experience – perhaps consider spending a bit more and booking Ronnie Scott’s

Visited for the first time, to find a welcoming club-like atmosphere awaiting and a suitably cosy place to listen to some interesting and enjoyable live jazz. The bar holds both familiar names and local brews that were new to me, but worth trying out! The surrounding area boasts a huge variety of eating establishments too, with an excellent choice of cultural/ethnic sources. Certainly anticipate visiting again, even though it is located on the opposite side of London.

Intimate venue tucked away just off Kingsland Road. Superb jazz always! Intelligent, experimental, modern jazz that is both accessible and intricate. We have sat in cabaret and theatre style here before - prefer theatre.
