My Dad introduced me to film festivals back when I was a little kid. He started by taking me to the Children's Film Fest. As I got a little older we moved on to French Film Fest & Latino Film Fest. The Chicago Latino Film Fest (CLFF) is the one fest we keep going back to annually. It's become a family tradition and it's a Chicago staple we always look forward to. Throughout the years it has been held in both Landmark Century Theater and River East Theater. The cost of a ticket is the same as a regular movie price. The films are independent, avant-garde, some are low budget while others are not, and a great opportunity to see something other than what's in the pop culture spot light for the two weeks it runs. Information tables are set up with helpful volunteers to answer questions and there's usually raffles, and they give free drink vouchers to Latin City! Aside from my Dad's actuarial profession, for well over a decade, he has been a volunteer mentor with at risk (to gangs & violence ect) inner city youth and he always brings a few kids to expose them to the arts. The youth always enjoy themselves! Q&A with actors and directors post screenings always make for a great learning curve for all in attendance. This year particularly hit close to home for us bc we had friends and Pastors from our church in a film called Glorious by Juan Daniel Zavaleta. With a budget of only $50,000 he told the story of one of our family friends whom passed away from cancer and reiterated his former days of being a gangbanger to finding salvation in Christ. This movie was bold in the message of Christ, entertaining, and heart wrenching at the same time. It makes me proud that members from our congregation can be ambassadors for Christ via the art of film making. I'm forever grateful to my Dad for exposing me to my Latino culture as well as other Latino regions via this film fest! It's always a great time and something different to do!

2017 is the 33rd year for CLIFF. If you are looking to make new friends, just expand your network or consider yourself a foreign movie buff then this is the event for you. The volunteers get 2 free film vouchers for every 4 hours of shift and there is no limit to the number of volunteer shifts. The festival booklet and the Latino film fest website both offer a very descriptive detail for each movie being played. I did not see any shows going sold out but they were almost full. So it's better to get ur tickets ahead of time. They had 5 movies playing in parallel; 3 per theater & 15 movies in a day. You can even talk to the volunteers as they can give you first hand feedback about some of the movies. Most of the movies are preceded by a short film and audience members are given an (optional) ballot card to rate one or both the films. The organizing committee/ people are super friendly and like family. Someone even got stuffed churros at the start of one of the afternoon shifts. Another plus is that you get to interact with the film crew in case they happen to be around. Pepe is the program director and is a super affable man. I totally loved the overall experience and will wait to volunteer again next year. If u do four volunteer shifts, you receive an invite to post event volunteer party which takes place about 10 days after the end of the festival. That party requires its own review and all I will mention here is that these people treat you like family.

THE CHICAGO LATINO FILM FESTIVAL: ¡Qué Divertido! This is the 31st Chicago Latino Film Festival. It ends April 23, 2015. What I appreciate about the Chicago Latino Film Festival is that they show films from over 20 countries. For example, some of the countries represented at the festival are: Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Venezuela, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Spain, Mexico, El Salvador, Peru and Chile, just to name a few. The genre of films varies from comedy to drama and thriller to documentary. You are bound to find a film that appeals to you. They are featuring over 100 films this year! Some of the films are only 15-20 minutes, but these short films are shown with another film that may be 60 to 90 minutes. No one is going to pay $12 to watch a 10, 15 or 20 minute film! I like to think of these very short-films as a "quickie" (and I'm not referring to sex here). In other words, you pay one price for watching two films. The Chicago Latino Film Festival is held at the AMC River West 21. General Admission is $12. If you are a member of the Illinois Latino Cultural Center (ILCC), AARP Member, Student or Senior Citizen, admission is $10 (however, you must present a valid ID). The Saturday or Sunday matinees are only $8 (but this is for the FIRST SHOW only). One year we purchased the "Passport" package, and went to see 12 different films. It is definitely a very good deal. However, we planned ahead, took a few days off from our jobs, and it worked out perfectly. Some people assume that the Chicago Latino Film Festival is sponsored by the City of Chicago, but it is not. It is sponsored by the Illinois Latino Cultural Center (ILCC). If you are seeking to unirse a la diversión (have some fun), the Chicago Latino Film Festival will not disappoint! I was super fain to know they are showing the film, "Casa Grande" (translation, "Big House" or "Large" House). This film is also known as "The Ballad of Poor Jean," which we saw at another international film festival. This film is the "Winner of the Audience Award" at last year's Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival. It is based on Fellipe Barbosa's semi-autobiographical feature-film debut which centers on a 17-year-old young man, Jean, whose privileged life comes crashing down when his parents declare bankruptcy. The name "Jean" translated means "John" or "Juan." Without giving away the ending, I will preface this by stating that there is a lot of drama in this film. For example, his relationship with his parents, and in particular, a very difficult relationship with his Father. There is also a love relationship that he must deal with and sort out, while confronting adult decisions in the process. If you enjoy "drama" films, I highly recommend "Casa Grande." TIPS: Be smart and save money. Take Public Transportation to the AMC River West 21. PARKING: What? You want to drive? Why? Oh, 'cuz you're a sadomasochist! Well, if this is your jam, there is a parking lot across the street, (between $12 to $25). You can "whip" yourself into a spot! ;D There is also another public parking lot next door to the theater. RESTAURANT recommendations: The Purple Pig (small plates/tapas), Gino's East (for pizza, salads, burgers), The Star of Siam (thai food), The Rocket Bar & Grill, Frontera Grill (Rick Bayless' restaurant), Timothy O'Toole's, D4 Irish Pub & Cafe, NIU Japanese Fusion, Indian Garden Restaurant, Great Taste Cafe, Reza's Restaurant, Subway (on Ontario St) and the Flamingo Bar & Grill, just to name a few. The vast majority of these restaurants are walking distance to the AMC.
