Day trips to the Lazio coast

Rome's closest beach, 30 minutes by direct train from Porta San Paolo. A long stretch of managed beach clubs with a handful of free public sections. Not the most beautiful in Lazio, but unmatched for convenience when you need the sea without planning ahead.

📍 Lido di Ostia — 30 min by train from Rome | Train from Porta San Paolo

An hour north by regional train, with calm, clear water and a more relaxed atmosphere than Ostia. The medieval castle of Santa Severa sits directly on the shore nearby. Less crowded and noticeably cleaner than the beaches immediately around Rome.

📍 Santa Marinella — 60 min by train from Rome | Train from Roma Termini

A working port town about 60 kilometres south, with good beaches, excellent seafood restaurants along the harbour and a clean free public beach on Riviera Zanardelli. Reachable by regional train in around an hour. Worth combining beach and lunch by the port.

📍 Anzio — 60 min by train from Rome | Train from Roma Termini

Inside the Circeo National Park, with wide dune-backed sand, clean water and Mount Circeo rising dramatically to the south. One of the few beaches near Rome that still feels genuinely wild. Best reached by car; harder to access without one.

📍 Sabaudia — 90 min by car from Rome | Car recommended

A clifftop town at the tip of the Circeo promontory, with a sheltered harbour beach and clear water below. Combine with Sabaudia on the same day for two very different landscapes along the same stretch of coastline.

📍 San Felice Circeo — 90 min by car from Rome | Car recommended

The most beautiful beach within easy reach of Rome. A whitewashed hilltop village above a long arc of golden sand, with exceptionally clear water and a setting that looks more Greek island than central Italy. Around 120 kilometres from Rome, best by car or train to Fondi-Sperlonga. Earns a full day.

📍 Sperlonga — 90 min by car from Rome | Car or train to Fondi-Sperlonga

 — most beaches operate on a paid system: sun lounger and umbrella typically cost €15–50 depending on location and season. Every beach also has a free public section (spiaggia libera), though quality and space vary.

 — July and August are busy. Getting to any popular beach before 10am makes a significant difference in finding space, parking and the best free-beach spots.

 — June and September offer the ideal balance: warm water, manageable crowds and fully operational facilities. October is still good for swimming at the southern beaches with almost no crowds.

 — Ostia, Santa Marinella and Anzio are easily reachable by regional train. For Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and Sperlonga, a car makes the trip significantly easier.

 — if you want to avoid paying, Ostia and Anzio both have decent free public sections. Further south the free beaches at Sabaudia (inside the national park) are among the best in Lazio.
