I have to disagree with the first guy's review - this place is incredible. We had 5pm reservations, and were seated promptly. We ordered a couple local beers, the garlic rice, and the deluxe platter. The meat really does melt in your mouth, thanks to the handsome chef across from me ;) The beef comes in thin (1/2-3/4") slices that you grill at your table to your preference. The flavor was stunning. I've never had better beef. Things to know: bathrooms are upstairs, and if you want someone to service your table you have to ring the button. Our deluxe platter for 2 was $138, and well worth it. Many people do the $78 per person package that gives you an appetizer, a salad, and dessert. But we were here for one thing and one thing only - the Matsusaka wagyu beef, and we made the perfect choice.

I was referred to this place by my hotel and made the reservation once I read the great reviews. I made a reservation--it was hard to find one-- and ordered the deluxe matsusaka tasting. The beef sushi course was fine. Thicker than carpaccio, tender. The server brought the beef slices QUICKLY--I was to do the grilling. Right after the beef, she brought the garlic rice, in a heavy, perhaps cast iron, bowl that continually cooked the rice for the next 30 minutes. The rice was fine--garlic and rice in a hot bowl--what's not to like? The beef samples, first of all were just that--samples. These are SMALL pieces of beef. They are sliced very thinly. Honestly, I can't say for sure how tender they were because I've not had super thin slices of steak before. I can tell you one thing, anyone who tells you the steak, or the fat, "melts in your mouth" is exaggerating. You can tell me I sound ridiculous because it should be obvious they are speaking metaphorically, but I've read it so many times I feel the need to mention it, here. Nothing melted in my mouth other than the ice cream. So, I paid extra for a large piece of filet only to find that the chef still cut it into bite-sized chunks (btw, is he a chef if I cook the meat?). I guess that's ok--after all, you are not given a steak knife--because you don't need one, given the pieces are already cut. So, how was it? Well, o.k., rubbing a big piece of fat on the hot metal grate before grilling my own meat added flavor, no doubt about it. I may do that at home next time I grill. And I like the idea of dipping variously in salt, flavored soy sauce, and wasabi--I'll get wasabi next time I cook a steak at home. But overall, the experience was underwhelming. The cost was reasonable--about $120, I think. Final thought: I know I shouldn't feel this way but, in my humble opinion, U.S. steakhouses offer a far superior product. Still, I prefer the idea of eating a cow that was massaged and pampered and killed humanely. I'd like all cows to be treated that way. That said, in terms of the quality of the final product, I'll take a thick, seared, medium-rare filet over these thin slices of beef any day of the week. Glad I did it. From now on I'll focus on any of the thousand other fascinating foods there are to find in Japan. I'll have the beef in the U.S.
