Have always liked Hughs Room for some of the best musical entertainment in town.  Their newer location is more comfortable and more acoustically serviceable than the old.  They no longer serve food but there are lots of options relatively nearby.

Hugh's Room was a west end institution for music, and now continues its legacy in the east. The new venue is much welcome in this unlikely location
This converted church has been only slightly renovated to accommodate its new parishioners.
Gone is the dining. The sight lines are not at all the same configuration. For all intents, the room has not really been altered at all from its churchy origins. Pews for seating, and painted religious scripture on the walls surround you as you look around pre show. Stained glass windows allow some filtered light through to the space.
Along with the pew seating are rows of folding chairs. Neither offer much comfort and seem tightly packed. To increase attendance I suppose.
The biggest, most obvious improvements come, of course with the addition of first class lights and sound system. The acoustics of this barn of a building work well. Probably common with churches. Hugh's has also provided the room with a beautiful grand piano and B3 organ. Both permanent fixtures I believe.
There is a bar. They serve throughout the show, however it would be awkward to excuse yourself in the midst of a show. But this is not a club or bar. Really a listening/ viewing venue. Great.
Still offering some of the best music in town, Hugh's Room Live lives!

Great place to see - and especially - hear a live concert!

HR is a venerable part of Toronto's musical landscape, forced a couple of years ago to relocate to the east end of town for financial reasons. It's now housed in a converted church hall with great acoustics, and a kind of diy sensibility. No longer a jazz-style lounge, it's more of a concert venue, but still a great place to see local and national artists laying it down on any given might! Good luck on keeping the Room rockin'!

An old church nicely renovated into a concert venue, small but very cozy, very intimate atmosphere, seating for only 200 persons, comfortable chairs, ample stage for bands in concert mode, good lighting & acoustics, with bar and service for receptions.

Jane Siberry at Hugh's Room, November the 27th… What a great place.  I called ahead to make sure of the tickets I'd purchased online; not an easy find with the delightful and sold out songstress Canadian Jane Siberry in town.  For her second Toronto show, a gracious Executive Director, Michael, assured me all was well in the day leading up, and what a venue!  Originally a church, with a gallery and lower level facilities, this gem of a spot had acoustics well suited, and made good on, by the dainty and coquettish Jane of the lovely eyes and smile. Canada's Indie Queen was preceded by opening act Jay Feelbender, who instantly had us singing along, as I continue to do so with his EP that was available at the door.  Lovely to behold and demure as ever, with her signature style in plumage and trill, 'twas Jane who was queen of the stage I've taken the liberty of showing here from some kind contributors to the web.  Funny, melancholic, hopeful, and with a blunt wit that had us all in stitches, she strung a story to guitar, piano, and backing recording that swept us up and away. Wielding her craft of past and present wares like a wand, Jane enchanted us with the simplest of mechanics and the depths of her soul.  I hold in the highest praise Hugh's new locale; they made sure those who were differently abled could come to Jane's show by hook or by crook, and are drumming up funding for an elevator; that should speak to the efforts everyone went to making the evening an inclusive one. At her surprise encore, Jane sat down at the piano only to promptly stand right back up and march around it, brusquely moving a music-stand out of the way, so her whole audience could see her.  I have to say, I can see why the jolie chanteuse followed Hugh's Room from the West End for her performances; this crew really cares about their patrons in a way emblematic of how Jane feels about love in the world, with no obsequiousness here.  I feel quite lucky to have been in the presence of so many beautiful people.  Jane, Jay, Michael — thank you.  I'll be back for more offerings in this astonishingly salon like venue; with Jane's fans, it was as if being in a music hall full of dear Friends, and indeed, Calling All Angels, we most certainly were. Last Thursday, I was at Hugh's Room Live to see Melanie Doane perform. It was a benefit concert to support the Doane Music School, which provides music education programs to Canadian youth through the ukulele. Where should I begin? Let's go with the original Hugh's Room. It used to be at 2261 Dundas Street West. It was founded in 2001 by Richard Carson, in memory of his brother Hugh, a musician who died of cancer. Hugh's Room Live moved to its current location on Broadview Avenue in July 2023. It is where the Broadview Faith Temple Church used to be. It makes sense that a music venue would take over a defunct church. The acoustics are fabulous! It is kind of weird returning to this venue. I used to stand in front of this church, be it talking to my mom or chatting with friends before we parted ways. I spent a lot of time in this neighbourhood, especially on Saturdays taking Cantonese classes a few blocks away. The concert was at 8 pm. I drove down to the Riverdale area and parked on Broadview. It's free parking after 6 pm on weekdays. Otherwise, it's Green P paid parking. This concert was general admission. Considering that most Melanie Doane fans would be my age or older, I didn't see this show being standing room only. I was right and relieved. There were seats, but you nabbed them when you arrived. The day before, I travelled home through Chicago. I walked for twenty minutes at Chicago O'hare airport to get to my gate. At Pearson, I walked for ten minutes from the plane to customs. My legs did not want to stand for this show! It is an older church, so there are stairs. It wasn't built for accessibility, but there aren't a ton of steps. If you use a cane or walker, you'd be fine here. Otherwise, it's not the venue if you have complex mobility issues. A woman at the front table said hi. I reciprocated and showed my ticket's QR code on my phone. She scanned it and let me know that I could sit anywhere that wasn't reserved. I asked where the washrooms were. They were downstairs. I used the women's before and after the show. There were three stalls. The washroom was quaint and clean. No complaints. I sat on the main floor. I tried a pew initially. It felt like church. There was no back support, so I moved up to a chair with some decent back support. Perfect! The front rows were reserved. There was seating on either side of the walls. You could also go up to the second floor for more seating. I love Melanie Doane and her music. My first experience was taking in my first Jann Arden concert at the National Art Centre in Ottawa in the late 90's. Opening for her was Melanie. I was floored by her singing and her playing multiple instruments, such as the mandolin, ukelele, and violin. I loved seeing her at shows when I lived in Winnipeg and when I moved back to the greater Toronto area. She doesn't perform often these days. She made giving the gift of ukelele playing to youth her commitment. I was pleased that she held a benefit for her music school. My first instrument was the ukelele in grade 3, so I get it. I went on to play until I was in grade 6. Melanie put on a terrific show. I last saw her a decade ago at, yep, the original Hugh's Room. Insane, right? I had a wonderful time here. Good memories came flooding back. She brought some special guests. Her children, Rosie and Theo, joined her on a song. The former is a singer and the latter is a drummer. They are products of the school and they frankly are blessed growing up with two musical parents. Kathryn Rose and Emilie Claire Barlow joined Melanie to sing a couple of songs. I loved that they covered Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus. They offer the best harmonies with edginess. It was nice seeing Gill Deacon there. I used to listen to her on a CBC music podcast years ago. She helped get the word out on donating to the school. Madeleine, a student of Doane Music School, sang and displayed her uke skills. She was sweet and talented. This venue does not have any food for purchase. It does have beverages, including alcoholic ones. Debit and credit cards are accepted. I liked coming to this former church for a fine evening of Melanie Doane music with her friends and family. I'd return again to take in another concert. It's the perfect venue with the best acoustics. (382)

This is an institution that holds the history of folk, blues, country and soul. I was blown away by the EPIC Samantha Windover and the indomitable Tandy Joy playing here tonight. It's a simple and comfortable venue--an old church--feels like you're in your friend's living room. It's a chance to meet the singers and song writers and other music aficionados. What a fantastic evening! Thank you.
