I had the blueberry-ginger scone, cappuccino and brisket breakfast sandwich. The food was delightful, and the service was slower than I expected. We waited about 10 minutes for coffees and 30 minutes for the sandwiches. The food was definitely worth the wait, and the staff was sweet and helpful. It’s also in a charming neighborhood that has great people watching.

Wow...where do I even start? Whether you're looking for a cozy café with great coffee / pastries, an intimate restaurant serving some of the best New American cooking, or just a place that has some of the friendliest, most inviting staff to ever grace the DC restaurant scene, Elle has you covered.

They operate a cute little coffee counter in the day, which includes some of their amazing scones, croissants, and other goodies, as well as outstanding espresso drinks. There isn't a ton of seating in the café section so it ends up being quite crowded, but if you're lucky enough to snag a seat, it's super cozy and the perfect place to read or just hang out. The café area is confined to two mini counters in a small corner next to the front window, so it always gets plenty of natural light and is a great place to people watch. I dropped by on a Sunday morning to grab an americano and their maple pecan scone; the americano was phenomenal, and the scone was such a delightful ode to autumn flavors. It was quite large, super buttery and rich, and packed with maple and pecan flavor without being overly sweet.

Come back in the evening and you'll stroll into what feels like a completely different restaurant. The coffee bar is transformed into a standard bar, and the ambient lighting, dark wooden furniture, and brick walls make the space feel incredibly cozy and intimate. Their dinner menu is quite pricey, but it's genuinely worth every penny. My friend promised that Elle had the "best vegetable he's ever tasted," and they absolutely delivered -- the roasted broccoli with sardines and parmesan was delightful. It was super simple, but I appreciated how well it let the natural flavor of each ingredient shine, and each component had plenty of its own flavor, with the parmesan and sardines offering a hit of salt, umami, and sight funkiness. We also got the grilled cucumber which, at first glance, seemed like such an odd menu item. After giving it a try, however, I'm now questioning why we don't always grill our cucumbers -- the cucumber was beautifully charred on the outside, and heat helped to bring out some of the vegetable's natural sweetness to counterbalance the smokiness from the grill. It was served on top of a bed of savory, tangy yogurt and with chopped hazelnuts, which offered a great crunch. I was most impressed by the skate; this fish is a rare find in DC, but they prepared with perfectly. It was super tender, which contrasted beautifully against the crispy, crunchy fried outer shell. The skate was topped with crispy onions and a savory, slightly spicy sauce, as well as swimming in a rich, incredibly umami broth. The skate may have been the single best thing I put in my mouth all year -- I'm going to be devastated when it falls out of season and rotates of the menu, but I'm also super excited to come back and sample Elle's next season of items.

Gonna be honest, this is one of the spots where I feel like the vibes are better than the food. It’s a very cute coffee shop, but the coffee is alright, and the bagel was pretty mediocre. It’s probably a wonderful spot to meet folks and frankly the only option in Mount Pleasant but I’m not sure that I would seek it out. Also definitely on the pricier side for what you’re getting

Food: The chai was delicious. It was not milky like most, you could taste the spices. I got the salmon beet bagel. The bagel was very chewy 😞 but the salmon, beets, and cream cheese were amazing 😍.
Service: A little slow but friendly.
Atmosphere: It's crowded inside. Definitely make an early reservation or they will be out of a lot of things.

The honey goat cheesecake was really good, especially with the sourdough breadcrumbs. Get it slightly cheaper during happy hours from 5-7pm.

Note that pastries are only available in the day, so go early if you want the guava turnover (which I didn’t get to try).

Jag köpte Oprahs favoritkaka! Jag håller med. Det är toppen! Nött chokladchips. Andra desserter såg också bra ut. Min server var riktigt trevlig.

Gick hit för middag med vänner medan du besöker området. Kul att se att det tidigare Hellers (som var på nedgång när jag senast visste det) har förvandlats till en blomstrande, chic restaurang. 

Jag njöt av inredningen - - det är ett slags kaffe / bageri utrymme upp - framsidan med en restaurang i - baksidan. Stämningen var avslappnad och glad under middagstimmen. 

Vår server var utmärkt - - varm, vänlig, kunnig och uppmärksam. 

Gård - till - bordstyp kök; menyn kändes lämplig för sommarsäsongen och betonade färskhet. 

Vid middagen fanns det en avsmakningsmeny alternativ ($ 90 /person) , eller så kan du beställa a la carte (som slutade med ungefär samma per person, förutsatt att varje person beställde ett par tallrikar) . Vi gjorde a la carte. Typiskt "små tallrikar" koncept, även om måltiden var väl - tempo i stället för raden om köket bara skjuta ut maten när den är klar. 

Totalt sett mycket god mat. Vårärtstoasten var välsmakande, med en fin balans av texturer. De grillade sommargrönsakerna var enastående goda. En sallad var toppen, med precis rätt dressing och lite brödsmulor till crunch. Pastarätten var dock lite intetsägande. 

Sammantaget en bra upplevelse - - ganska dyrt, dock. Skulle definitivt återvända för en rolig middag med vänner.

Vi kom entusiastiskt för att kolla in denna restaurang som lät riktigt bra.
Vad är positivt: tjänsten. Alla var verkligen trevliga.
Och här är vad som fick oss att tänka "vi kommer inte tillbaka".
Först försökte vi en platta från de tre olika avsnitten.
Delarna är ganska små (och är INTE en stor ätare; här i USA hamnar vi ofta med att dela upp en del eftersom de är så stora.) Den första skålen var en rödbetor dopp med focaccia (jag kommer ifrån focaccia kommer från) . Så stigningen var bra men den brändes och det borde inte vara. Jag skulle också kalla det bröd, inte focaccia.
Kimchi toast var OK, igen bröd på den kolsyrade sidan (det måste vara en kockens val?) Men vi gillar inte att smaka det brända brödet när du äter det (i Italien skrapar du bort det om det är för kolsyrat som det skulle få allt att smaka bittert)
Hälleflundra var bra, även om persilja bergen förstörde smaken på den känsliga fisken, som var läcker och perfekt kokta. Synd att det var en liten del för 30 $ så, igen, ganska på den dyra sidan.
Apple smuldra var OK men inget särskilt.
Så när vi är på jakt efter att kolla in alla restauranger som visas på de bästa 100 på Washingtonian, och vi har hittat några stora överraskningar. . . här är vår dom: definitivt över rankade, små portioner, några dåliga kombinationer i ingrediensmixen, några no-go-zon (kolsyrat bröd).
Slutligen: fortfarande för mycket AC, med de aktuella temperaturerna finns det inget behov av att känna på den kyliga sidan under middagen; och ljusets dimning för kraftfull, plötsligt var det svårt att se.

Intressant utrymme i ett område med blandad användning på MT Pleasant Road. Tror att parkering kan vara en utmaning. lite förvirrande när man går in som skyltar säger fortfarande att det är ett bageri som det är med bord och disk i framsidan och ett litet bakrum med ungefär ett dussin bord. Inte säker på om vibe / dekor är avsiktlig eller bara behöver en allvarlig ansiktslyftning, personalen är uppmärksam och hjälpsam men ibland föll något kort. Vi gick till middag och hade persika panzamella som var en extremt intressant kombination av smaker som lockar smaklökarna. Hubs hade en special av husgjord tagliatelle med svamp sås och den sprängde med smak. Fav dotter hade äggväxtparken cavatelli som hon gnuggade om. Vi delade en dessert som var läcker. Mycket intressant hantverk cocktails avslutade en bra matupplevelse.

Äntligen en svalare dag för cykling så beslutade att kolla in detta Mt Pleasant Bageri / café öppnade för ungefär ett år sedan. På en sträcka av Mt Pleasant Street med en handfull andra små men anmärkningsvärda restauranger, måste du leta efter det blekna blå tecknet "Heller's Bakery" för att hitta det, eftersom namnet "Ell?" Inte är lätt att se om inte du är precis vid ingången. Vi har aldrig varit i Hellers Bakery men interiören sägs vara så platsen skulle ha sett ut i gamla dagar. Med några moderna detaljer utan tvekan - till exempel de nakna tegelväggarna på ena sidan. Sittplatser här innehåller massor av räknare, de smala direkt framför fönstret är bra för människor som tittar på. Längre tillbaka finns det ett långt barområde där du också kan se kökinsatser. På baksidan finns en liten matsal. Under dagen som café / bageri är beställningen vid räknaren - om du äter i får du ett nummer och mat tas till dig.

Vi anlände klockan 10:30 på morgonen på en söndag och det var redan ganska upptaget, massor av barnvagnar med barnvagnar, under nästa timme ibland kunde beställningsraden nå ett dussin långt (av den anledningen om man sitter i baren bättre flytta längre in som annars skulle du kännas boxas av de som väntar i rad. Försökte frukostsmörgåsen - ganska gourmet, guavaomsättning - mycket rik och flakey och persika paj (för $ 6 lite av en liten del, så var det lilla kakor för citronvalmor på $ 1 @). Te serveras i en liten fransk presskanna med lösa teblad och varm latte i en stor tekopp med en utsökt utformad grädde virvel. Allt var utsökt. Trevlig och avslappnad atmosfär. Definitivt en plats att hålla på din lista för upprepade besök.

Jag försökte Elle på morgonen och blev roade på alla fel sätt till priset av en liten rulle och kaffe. Middag gav samma resultat. Dess en funky make över den ikoniska Heller bageri och personal är mycket vänliga och hjälpsamma, men biljettpriset är fruktansvärt dyr och uppriktigt sagt inte så bra. Vår snapper var på den mjuka sidan och tagliatellen drunknade i olja. Bröd och betade grönsaker till priset av en (liten) tank av gas. Kör inte i kö, eller boka veckan i förväg för en reservation. Det finns mycket bättre värden i NW.

Vi kom för brunch efter att ha gått till porträttgalleriet. Bara 10 minuters promenad från Columbia Hts tunnelbanan. Du måste vänta i raden för att beställa och det tas till dig. Vi delade den fantastiska omelet och bönder ost tallrik. Vi hade också 2 utmärkta lattes. Mycket europeiskt i atmosfären!

Vi hoppades att komma in utan en reservation tidigt lördag kväll, efter att ha ingen tur någon annanstans. Visade sig vara ett lyckligt drag. Även om vi hade "LT" nära köksdörren och varnade för en tidsgräns på grund av en 7: 30 reservation för bordet, var vår server hjälpsam och vänlig och hennes vägledning tillsammans med våra naturliga proclivities resulterade i cocktails vi gillade och delade rätter vi slutade till sista droppen.

Många tack till personalen och förvaltningen. Vi ringde för att kontrollera tillgänglighet på en regnig lördag. att många restauranger var bokade. Chefen sade om vi kom fram före 9:30 pm han skulle få oss sittande. Köket stängdes klockan 10 på kvällen, så det var lite tid men vi kände oss inte rusade. Mat anlände i tid och listan vin var perfekt. Personalen är mycket uppmärksam och vänlig. Trevlig upplevelse!

Min vän och jag hade en underbar måltid på Elle med en välbalanserad cocktail. Detta är ännu en liten, delad maträtt och fyra rätter var tillräckligt för vår måltid. Tidpunkten för disken var mycket bra och servern var också mycket tankeväckande om rätternas ordning, slutade måltiden med Maple marinated feta som var mer av vår öken än en starter. Kimchi toast och kycklinglevermus var både läckra. Restaurangen var inte mycket bullriga och gångavstånd från tunnelbanan. Jag kommer gärna tillbaka.

Gick det efter middagen till dessert och även om det var sent, blev jag inte besviken. Utmärkt citronmingue paj och espressomousse var också ganska bra. Trevlig atmosfär också.

Regisserad av conciergen på vårt hotell avgick vi till fots genom bostadsområdet Mount Pleasant stadsdel på en sval och bekväm sommarnatt, ljuden från de mer livliga "nattlivsstaden" av DC bakom oss. Passerade latinska familje restauranger och företag som drog 18th Street, passerade rader av familjehem lining av sidogatorna vi promenerade vidare tills vi kom fram till en samling av korsgator, företag och udda stadsvinklar som bildade det som såg ut som en liten stad, inbäddat i en större stad som bara DC: s pick-up-sticks layout av gator kan skapa. Där fann vi att Elle bor i det tidigare huvudkvarteret i Heller Bakery-kedjan i Washington.

HELLEr bageri

Inuti den varma och välkomnande personalen ledde oss till baren för att vänta på bordet bredvid bageriets gamla displaycase fyllt med de nya läckerheterna för vår kommande sista nattkurs - eller vår första. Det finns inga matregler på Elle.

Baren erbjuder exceptionella versioner av de nödvändiga hantverksmässiga drinkarna och en perfekt curated lista med öl och vin.

Snabbt överförd till vårt bord direkt i tid hanterade hostess flytten från bar till bord utan att behöva separat betalning, förvirring eller besvär.

På entree - ljus var liten tallrik tung meny vid första anblicken en oro - det var sent. Vi hade rest ett bra avstånd. Vi var hungriga! I stället för att bekymra mig menyn i stället förvandlades till vår fördel med hälsosamma medelstora portioner i alla kategorier med bara tillräckligt heft, panache och tantalizing smaker som lämnade oss mer än nöjda, sated och celebratory.

Fokuserad på säsongsbetonade och lokala rätter menyn kommer sannolikt att förändras men den kvällen vi reveled i jordgubbssallad, ärt och skinka linguine, anka benkakor bland andra rätter som alla promenerade linjen mellan ljus och delikat i smak med ett starkt slag av påverkan på känner. Faktum är att vi slutade beställa för mycket och servitrisen föreslog även att avbryta ett objekt för att göra plats för våra tre desserter.

Vi hade en fantastisk måltid på Elle; aptitretare, förrätter, drinkar, service och atmosfär var på punkt. Den enda fläcken var att jordgubbe Shortcake dessert var intetsägande. För en plats som är en del bageri och som hade sådan enastående mat annars hade jag extremt stora förhoppningar om efterrätten. Ändå gjorde denna plats enkelt vår lista över topp 5 i DC.

Frukostsmörgås är en standout med fluffiga ägg tillagade med omsorg på en mjuk rulle. Dagen där vi var där var quiche svamp, squash och getost. Skorpan var väl utförd och getosten var inte framträdande. Kardemumapelsungen var ojämn. Curry chickpea och potatis puff hade trevligt kryddor och bakverk var bra om lite rustikt utseende. Iced latte och varm choklad (komplett med latte art) nåddes. Definitivt känns mer som en bar än ett café. Gatuparkering finns tillgänglig. Har inte rum eller skulle ha velat prova earl grå rosin scone, tårta och paj.
