What can I say, I was by the fountain on a really blisteringly hot day and so the tantalizingness of gelato too over and I just plain had to have some gelato at Franco's at the Fountain, which is what the place was named when I went here. I had Superman gelato which was pretty decent though it melted very messily in the heat.

We had a full morning of walking through Millennium and Grant parks so when we arrived at the Buckingham Fountain, we were ready for some relief from the hot Chicago summer. There it was - the airconditioned Fountain Cafe! The cafe is very clean and bright with glass displays full of salads, fruit, cupcakes and sandwiches including the traditional Chicago Hot Dog. The most notable about Fountain Cafe are the students - dressed in their crisp white chef coats, they are courteous, friendly and very accommodating. The cafe is operated and serviced by students from the Washburne Culinary Institute. Such a wonderful place to showcase their creativity and passion. One more thing, there is no indoor seating but there are tables and chairs outside.

I've gotta give this place the A-OK as it's nice to find a quick place near the fountain and the lake that serves more than a hot dog. The food's not bad, it's not great, but most importantly it doesn't feel like a tourist trap when it comes to the prices.

The gelato was $6 for like 2 oz. by the time we got out of line and able to eat it, it was melted down the sides. waste of money.

I had a great experience with this cafe and it's a bit of an oasis in the park where there is little else most days. The culinary students that run the place are always respectful and cordial and the food is excellent. This isn't gourmet food, even if the future chefs are capable. This is a stand in a park so what you are going to get will be fast, mobile and quite satisfying.

Dear RealityOne C: We apologize for the experience you had and hope that you come back to the Fountain Café this year. Recognizing that changes had to be made, we have a new management team in place and we recently created a new menu that features custom designed sandwiches that celebrate Chicago's culturally diverse neighborhoods and food traditions. Our sandwiches are made fresh daily and include: The Pilsen: torta bread with shredded chicken; The Bronzeville: BBQ chicken with Carolina slaw; The Little Italy: featuring Italian cuts of meat; The Greektown: deli fresh cut turkey with veggies and feta cheese; The Gold Coast: mounds of roasted vegetables; The Stock Yard: roast beef with caramelized onions; and the traditional Chicago Vienna beef hot dog. We also serve a number of desserts including red velvet cupcakes and toll house and oatmeal raisin cookies. We're open daily from 10 a.m.-9 p.m., weather permitting until mid-October.
