The Thonburi Palace, AKA in Thai as Phra Racha Wang Derm (พระราชวังเดิม), which literally translates as former palace, is the former royal palace of King Taksin, who ruled the kingdom of Thailand (then known as the Siamese of Thonburi) after the fall of the former capital Ayutthaya in 1767. It served as the residences of many high-ranking members of the Chakri dynasty until 1900, when the site was reorganised to be the Royal Thai Naval Academy, whom still oversee the site today.

Today, visitors can visit the former palace to see an important piece of Thai history and worship King Taksin, who is honoured as a national hero. Beyond this, visitors can view the living quarters and many historical artefacts from King Taksin's time and see the enguiniety of Thailand of that time.

The site is located by the river, with options to come by boat or car. Plus, the former palace is right next to the iconic Wat Arun.

This place is The hidden gem! It's just next to Wat Arun, but it is full of history antique, museum of the lesser know Thais prince, old palace of King Tarksin and much more. Some of the antique is more than 200 years old and you can see some of the antique up close and personal. There are guided tours, but only moderate in Thai. This place is actually inside the Thai navy, so you must obliged by the rules. Due to Covid, public opening has been close for 4 years and it will only open for public until the end of 2022. When will the museum open for public again in 2023 is due to be know.

I was lucky enough to go visit there when Wang Derm Palace (พระราชวังเดิม)’s open for 2 weeks for all to go visit. Unfortunately, most of the places just don’t allow taking photos nor videos.

Though, you could always go and pay some respect at the King Taksin the great just right in front of the palace. It's always open!
