"Oaxaca: The Story of Seven Moles" was a delightful introduction to the Mexican sauce and its variety of flavours. Every dish was exquisite in its own way, and the food-mole pairing was very well done. This restaurant was the meal we were most looking forward to in Chicago, but it turned out to be the most shocking one. If you are unfamiliar with Mexican culture and are thinking about trying something new, think twice!

Every dish was extremely salty, and the tortillas had a strong fermented taste. One of the dishes included beef bone marrow, which was incredibly greasy and nauseating. The dessert, a pineapple and apple wrap, had such intense spices that it destroyed my sanity.

The five of us spent nearly $2,000, which I personally think was not worth it given the quality and ingredients of the food. The only redeeming feature was the upgraded wine list, which was quite good.

I dined here as a solo diner while in town for work and had an amazing meal. The Mexico City taco tour was a blast and a fabulous tribute. To the reviewers who didn’t enjoy their meals, I have no idea what happened because mine was amazing from beginning to end.

Starting with the good - the food was tasty and well executed. While some dishes were lacking a bit in balance for my pallette, I recognize that these are takes on traditional dishes, that aren't always balanced, and is therefore meant to be experienced this way.
The only nit I have is for the dish with the truffle - the poblano crema has a very dominant flavor that drowns out any hint of truffle. Either add way more truffle or remove it, as it feels out of place.

For the bad - ambiance was just uncomfortable. The music was waaaaay too loud, to the point where our servers was explaining a dish and made a comment on how loud it is (and it still wasn't turned down). This was to the point of discomfort and made the relatively long waits between dishes feel even longer. It was a 2.5 hour uncomfortable experience and despite the food being great, we couldn't wait to leave.
To add to that, the couch/seat I was on was uncomfortable and the AC was running a bit too cold. This genuinely is disappointing because it for sure soured the experience for us.

Finally, service was mediocre. While our table was always expediently cleaned, but water wasn't refilled frequently, and our server forgot when that we noted at the very beginning that we won't be having alcohol and proceeded to offer the pairings some 10 minutes later. Combined with the long waits and the occasional struggle to recall dish ingredients, it did not help the issues I listed above.

All in all, the food is well worth the money, but the overall experience makes it a place I can't recommend and won't go back to.
Hopefully it was just an off night.

Starting off, the Aguachile de Pulpo y Camaron, an appetizer with octopus, avocado, sashimi-grade shrimp, and cucumber, was a refreshing palate opener. This was followed by a decent Tortilla de Maiz Nuevo Relleno. The complimentary dish, although a bit too salty for my liking, was a nice gesture.

The Mone de Pescado was wrapped in banana leaves, but it had a slightly fishy cod. However, the Hornedo de Cochinta was a standout with pork and foie gras. This dish might not be traditionally Mexican, but it was irresistible.

For dessert, the Regalo de Platano Macho and Cacao were served. The former, a dried banana slice with a brownie-like cake, was overly sweet for me. However, the latter, a chocolate cheese cake with ice cream, was delightful.

Overall, a hearty 4.5/5 for the unique experience and a great variety of food. While some of the dishes were a hit-and-miss for me, the restaurant's willingness to experiment and their generous portions made the visit worthwhile. Would recommend giving Topolobampo a try, even if you're not typically a fan of Mexican cuisine. And don't miss out on XOCO next door, it's another gem.

"Oaxaca: Story of 7 Moles" var en härlig introduktion till den mexikanska såsen och dess olika smaker. Varje maträtt var utsökt på sitt eget sätt, och maten - mullvadsparning var mycket bra gjort. Serveringspersonalen var också tålmodiga med att förklara varje rätt, även om det var svårt att fånga eftersom accenten var tjock ibland, men jag ser det som ett tecken på äkthet.

Jag ätit middag här med min fru och två nära vänner. Två personer hade "The Seven Moles of Oaxaca" -provningsmenyn och två av oss hade Topolo Classic Tasting-menyn. Jag kunde växa - poetiskt om varje kurs men jag kommer att rädda dig från att vara till ord. Låt mig säga att vi hade ett delat parti och med en trafikolycka gjorde de oss en enorm tjänst och räddade vår reservation även om en grupp var sent. Utmärkelser från klassikern inkluderade Soap Azteca och Pescado a la Talla. Varje kurs hade stora fullrika smaker och kockarna förtjänade mycket kredit. Yellow Mole och Foie Gras var fantastisk, den svarta mullvad var rik och full av smak. Jag älskade den sötade gröna mullvad. Wow vilken överraskning av smak.

Det var 3 förinställda middagar bestående av 7 eller 8 kurser. Varje kurs var till skillnad från någon maträtt som jag har haft på vanliga amerikanska mexikanska restauranger. Även om det inte är billigt att äta här, är maten och servicen värt priset.

Vi hade aldrig varit förut och valt Topolo Classic-menyn. Definitivt gav mig ett perspektiv på mexikansk mat jag aldrig har haft förut. Massor av djupa smaker och intressant användning av värme. Definitivt inte vad vi normalt anser mexikansk mat. Den enda missen för mig var laxen. Det var förberett väl, verkade helt enkelt på plats med allt annat av någon anledning.

Topolo Classic Margarita var fantastisk. Definitivt värt det. Viner vid glaset var riktigt dyra och, kanske på grund av glasstorleken, verkade det inte som de 6 oz-hällen som anges.

Tjänsten var mycket vänlig och mycket bra. Några gånger kändes det rusade när någon förde en kurs till bordet eftersom de verkligen skulle gå igenom beskrivningen och lämna, men inget för negativt.

Totalt sett definitivt värt besöket och vi ser fram emot att gå tillbaka.

Anländer klockan 9: 14 efter att ha fått höra att klockan 9: 15. Vi fick höra att vi skulle sitta på en minut. Nu är värdstället för Topolo inne i Frontera Grille och var ganska trångt. Klockan 9: 31 vill jag tillbaka för att fråga. Fick höra att deras system var nere och kunde inte få plats för någon. Jag frågade om att få en drink på Frontera och fick höra att deras system var detsamma. Jag frågade sedan om vi skulle lämna och åka någon annanstans eftersom vi var tvungna att reservera Topolo med ett kreditkort och inte ville bli debiterade för att dyka upp och inte sitta. Vid denna punkt förenades den artiga men ointresserade värden av en kvinna av ledningssorter. Den här kvinnan förde oss med en drink från Frontera. Klockan 9: 37 fick jag en text som mitt bord var klart. När vi återvände till värd fick höra att Topolo-värden hade sittplats för någon annan, så vi fick inte plats förrän 9: 42.

Vid bordet var vår server ganska trevlig och gav fina förklaringar till smakprovmenyn och vin / cocktailalternativ. Tjänsten som helhet var dock besvärlig. För att försöka gå på toaletten krävs det att du flyttar bordet för att komma ut. Matlöparna tog med sig de två sista banorna i en rusning på samma gång eftersom det var efter midnatt. Lufttemperaturen gick också från obehagligt varmt (till att ändra mitt glas rött vin till vitt för något kylt).

Sammantaget är maten bra men priset är inte värt den rusade och opersonliga tjänsten. Spara pengarna och hålla dig till Frontera. Eller åka till Alinea om du vill ha Michelin Excellance.

Vi hade den klassiska smakprovmenyn. Vi gillade apertizer - soppa mycket, och åtnjöt också kycklingrätten. Både laxen och biffen var bra, men inte bra. Vår servitör var trevlig, men det fanns många av dem runt bordet. Det var en trevlig upplevelse, men med priset i toppområdet är värdet för pengarna inte ett 5.

Min fru och jag besökte under vår vistelse i Chicago. Efter att ha provat ett antal smakprov menyer i vår tid och också njuter av mexikansk mat, tyckte vi att det skulle vara bra att försöka någonstans som erbjuder kombinationen av de två. Vi blev inte besvikna.

Vi valde våren menyn med matchat vin och åtnjöt alla kurser. Kombinationen av smaker med mexikanska kryddor var stor. Vinet parade bra med varje kurs och hällde var generösa nog.

Tjänsten var mycket bra hela med vår servitör (eller vår kock) förklara varje maträtt och matchade vin väl.

Skulle rekommendera om du vill ha bra mat matchad med mexikanska smaker.

Verkligen vegetarisk vänlig. Maten var utsökt och minnesvärd! Jag hade fem kursen måltiden och det var bra och mer än fyllning. Tjänsten var också på plats.

Vi har flera av Rick Bayless "cookbooks" så var intresserade av att försöka sin restaurang. Tre fastprismenyer. Min fru fick 6 - 7 kursen regionala provsmakning och jag fick 5 kurs klassisk provsmakning. Hon fick tequila / mezcal provsmakning och jag gjorde vinprovningen. Tjänsten var mycket bra, personalen kunde svara på några frågor som vi hade. Min fru och jag kom överens om att den klassiska provsmakningen är förmodligen det bästa alternativet. En mycket trevlig sak de gjorde, för min fru hade en extra kurs, de tog mig ett urval av maträtt att äta medan hon åt henne "extra" kurs. På så sätt behövde jag inte sitta och se henne äta. Bästa kursen av alla de vi hade var förmodligen tortillasoppa på den klassiska menyn.

Detta är en Rick & Deann Bayless restaurang som vi ville försöka. Det var väldigt snyggt inredda inuti. Mycket färgstark och tyst i privatrummet utanför barrummet. Maten var mycket välsmakande och annorlunda. Jag stannade säker inte gillar mycket kryddig och beställde quesadillas.

Jag har varit i Topolobampo väl över ett dussin gånger. . . antagligen närmare 20 gånger. Maten är hit eller miss. Ibland är jag väldigt glad över det. Andra gånger tycker jag att jag verkligen spenderade så mycket på det?

Toaletter är alltid smutsiga. Jag har skrivit några få recensioner på det och uppenbarligen ingen bryr sig. I slutet av dagen, om en sådan grundläggande sak inte är ren, undrar du vad restaurangfilosofin är, åtminstone när det gäller hygien.

Jag har haft flera måltider på XOCO och Frontera Grill och anser dem de bästa mexikanska rätterna i deras prisnisch. Jag kan inte säga detsamma för Topolobampo. Atmosfären är tillräckligt bra men borden ligger ganska nära varandra. Våra servitör var fantastiskt. Mycket kunnig om provsmakningsmöjligheterna, cocktailberedningar och vinföreningarna. Var och en av de anställda som hällde vinet var välinformerade om vinernas ursprung. Min man och jag beställde de fem kurserna Seasons Embrace. Två av de fem kurserna innehöll bacon / fläskkött. Kyckling eller nötkött borde ha inkorporerats i en av dessa kurser. De andra fokuserade på svärdfisk, svamp och efterrätt. Med undantag för efterrätten var smaken inte lika tydliga som jag skulle ha förväntat mig. Den gratis väskan med markkakao var en fin touch.

Rick Bayless har skapat ett mästerverk med Topolobampo. Maten är spännande och raffinerad, stämningen är utmärkt, och tjänsten matchar alla fina restauranger någonstans. Vi älskade vår måltid här, och det var en bra introduktion till god mat för de vänner som vi tog med. Du kommer aldrig att uppleva mexikansk mat så här någon annanstans i USA. Kom, få 7-rättersmenyn med vinföreningar, och transporteras Mexiko i händerna på en världskänd kock.

Jag är ett stort fan av Frontera Grill, som jag har besökt varannan gång jag har varit i Chicago. Så jag såg verkligen fram emot lunch på Topolobampo. Vi beställde guacamole och prix fix lunch med carne asada.
Guacamolen var gudomlig - - flätig, mogna avokado med välbalanserad kryddning och bra liten chili-spark.
Blandadgrön sallad hade stora gröna och alltför mycket av en mycket fin dressing.
Carne asada var kall och intetsägande.
Desserten sundae var stor och läcker, men utan någon av Bayles smak innovation du förväntar dig.
