We have only been here a few hours and I can already say this is one of the loveliest hotels we have ever stayed at!  The hotel and rooms are charming, the location fantastic, but what makes Hotel du Vin a truly wonderful place to stay is the incredible staff, in particular Ben and Jennifer!!  We arrived early in the morning jet lagged and tired and Ben, the manager, was so incredibly warm and welcoming!   He set us up next to the fireplace so we could have breakfast and did everything you can possibly imagine to make sure we had a lovely and delicious  breakfast.   He was so kind and attentive and nothing was too much trouble.  They even went out of their way not to wake my husband who  took a rather deep and lengthy nap by the fire. Jennifer, at reception, was just as wonderful!  I had emailed reservations prior to our stay expressing a desire for their most “charming” room.  Jennifer patiently and cheerfully showed us several options to make sure we had the room we most liked.  I have stayed at many 5 star hotels and while service can be impeccable and polite, it is often formal and cold.  At Hotel du Vin Edinburgh you get the exceptional service of a 5 star hotel with the warmth and cheer of an old friend.  What could be better :)!!

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at the lovely Hotel du Vin for the first week in December. Jennifer was a wonderful host and took care of us. She greeted us with kindness and led us to our room, explaining all the features and amenities. She delivered us champagne and ensured that our luggage would be kept and delivered back to our room on our return trip from the Highlands. The establishment has dedication and charm. There's a continual fireplace roaring in their whisky lounge, and the dining room is just what you want first thing in the morning before starting an adventure through the city. Our suite was cozy and relaxing, and the staff was at the ready for any request we had. We were so spoiled that we couldn't wait to come back from our weekend journey to the Isle of Skye. We felt at home and will never forget this experience. Thank you.

A wonderful hotel. I am also a hotel manager and I liked it very much both as a guest and a tourism professional. Great rooms, very nice room names, a magnificent restaurant and a very enjoyable garden. Congratulations.
A big thank you to the staff. They are very polite and helpful. Just like all Scots. Especially the lady at the reception (I guess she was not Scottish :) and all the other front desk staff.

We just stayed at this location with a few friends and honestly, I'm not sure it was worth the money.  The hotel was nice enough, but really you seem to be paying for ease of access to local attractions.  The organization of the hotel is gimmicky and confusing, but nothing really stood out as amazing and after reflecting about our trip, the hotel just seems too expensive.  Our "view" from our balcony was a wall and the air conditioning would not keep up.  We were able to stay mostly comfortable with a fan that we found in the closet, but it did make the lights flicker. I will say that it was a pretty quiet location and the staff was quite nice.  The food and drink weren't interesting at all

On the site of an old asylum, (no.  We found no evidence of ghosts!) this hotel is awesome.  The historic building has a million little details, so you can always find something new when you look.  The restaurant is outstanding with delicious food and excellent service.  The desk personnel are very friendly and helpful.
The only quirk in the stay was that the floors in our room on the third floor were very creaky in spots.  Since the building was erected in 1743, we took this in stride.  My apologies to anyone who may have stayed under us on the second floor. (We heard no complaints about it during our stay)

Hotel du Vin & Bistro - Edinburgh

This was a very nice hotel, but they had a wedding reception right below all of the rooms we were staying in and they were singing karaoke and it was going on till pretty late at night so that was a little annoying. We had to take off before 8 o'clock in the morning and the breakfast wasn't ready so that was another thing that was kind of disappointing. Other than that the rooms were nice.

Lovely comfortable room and fantastic deep bathtub. Good breakfast though marred by loud Muzak. Dinner was pleasant in spite of a supercilious French waiter. Location is both quiet and convenient.

Came for dinner and drinks one night and drinks on a second night. We sat in the upstairs bar the first evening and I opted for a classic champagne cocktail which was quite good. I loved the décor with comfy club chairs and dark wood. We were then seated and the one flaw of this establishment was in effect for the remainder of our two visits: slow service. It took over 25 minutes once they dropped the menus off before someone came back to the table. Apparently they have the hostess act as sole order taker and sommelier while other people deliver food. It made zero sense as the restaurant was packed. The food itself was amazing, I had the foie gras appetizer and then the 40 day Scottish steak and frites. Everything was artfully plated and perfectly prepared. We then went outside for a cigar and drinks and again it took forever to have our order taken, I had to go in three times to get someone's attention. The other issue is the whisky list is egregiously out of date, half the ones we requested were no longer available. It's a shame because the food really is that good.

Great location with easy walking to Bryers Lane and the botanical garden. The bar was excellent with a very good selection of wines. The scallops we ate were so good we came back a day later and ordered the same thing! Hotel is pretty convoluted as it is comprised of five houses joined together. The water pressure in the toilet wasn't the best. I literally needed to flush a few times before adequate water came on. Nice staff, especially Mark and Ben.

We had an amazing stay. Charming, cozy room with luxurious bathroom. Staff was outgoing and friendly. The location is ideal -- a few blocks from the city center but just off the beaten path enough that it felt more neighborhood-based. Highly recommend!

We stayed 3 nights in the Grange room over a year ago, and I still look back on our time there fondly. Forgive me, but I forgot the name of the hotel clerk/concierge that was so helpful, but he was wonderful. He found out we were in Scotland to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and he made our time there special. He gave us some wonderful recommendations for restaurants and what to do each day. When we return, we hope to stay at the Hotel du Vin once more!

A French restaurant in the middle of St Andrews, Scotland. Seemed like a good idea. We were seated right away then waited 20 minutes before seeing a staff member again, and that was the result of one of our party leaving the table to ask for assistance. The ambience was good, the food pretty average. I thought the evening was overpriced and do not recommend.

We recently had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Du Vin in the historic city of Edinburgh. Our experiences at the hotel exceeded our expectations. Hotel Du Vin captured the essence of Edinburgh's rich history and offered a unique and unforgettable stay. From the moment we entered, we were greeted by a welcoming and helpful staff, eager to assist us and ensure a comfortable stay. We were told at one point that the hotel was an insane asylum, which added to our appreciation of the unique design and décor throughout the hotel. Our suite room was spacious and decorated with a hint of historical flair. The bed was comfortable and we got a kick out of the cool bathtub that was located outside of the bathroom (not all rooms are set up like that, though). One of the many benefits of this hotel is its onsite restaurant and cocktail lounge, both of which we enjoyed. Note that if you choose not to have daily room service you will be provided with a credit towards a cocktail at their unique lounge (which we did not hesitate to use almost immediately!). Hotel Du Vin is in a great location - between many of the major historical sights of Edinburgh as well as within short walking distance to a number of quaint shops and great local restaurants and pubs. We found that staying at Hotel Du Vin provided a blend of historical charm and modern comfort that enhanced our visit to Edinburgh and we highly recommend this hotel.

So this place used to be a Mental Asylum And now for the review... The service, food, standards and overall personality of this hotel make for a solid four star experience. I stayed in one of their sister hotels before so there is a faint whiff of 'chain' but certainly nothing that takes away from the experience. Like I said, a solid four star experience, that's until I strolled into the bathroom for a shower after a cold afternoon in Edinburgh... and all of a sudden 4 became 5. Underfloor heating 'ya wee dancer'!
