There's something effortlessly sophisticated about the remarkably inviting vibe of this Basque tapas bar and restaurant-from the wood panelled ceilings and plain white archways, to the sharp but unobtrusive wait staff. The food and drink are stellar in the same way--I sampled the chicken croquetas, a seared tuna dish, and a wyagu steak that made at least one of our party cry with appreciation and made me---married to an Argentine, and no stranger to to some of the better steak--feel it was one of the more profound, melt in your mouth, perfect char experiences I've had in some time.  It was that well prepared. Shared dessert was torrijas which was, like the steak, prepared to perfection and generously portioned for a group.  The wine list is lovely, small but thoughtfully curated and, most generously, hitting a sweet spot in the 50-60 $ range with a mix of interesting Spanish and French bottles. Throw in vermouth on tap which drank like coca cola, and a buzzy playlist played on some premium stereo equipment,  not to mention a lovely corner location deep in Chinatown, well, I really don't want to say more so I can have a chance to get a seat on my return trips....

This is a place with fantastic potential. I want to see it evolve.

Bar Oliver is a great newcomer to the area of transition between the Lower East Side, Chinatown, and the lower Manhattan waterfront. It's south of Confucius Plaza, the southern end of East Broadway, and a solid 20 minute walk south of Dimes Square. I have seen galleries come an go at this address but never a bar or restaurant.

Let me affirm what so many have written about the inside of Bar Oliver. It is warm, beautiful and just exquisite. It has several seating options, a really nice bar, and a big red booth in the back. And someone is an audiophile. I am no expert by any means, but if one sits anywhere in this space, they will be wowed by the hi-fi system that sits between the bar and the big red booth. I think I saw a McIntosh streaming preamp, a McIntosh integrated amp, and serious wood cabinet speakers (KLH? Mission?) hanging from the ceiling. It's an awesome system. Go just to have a drink at the bar and listen to THAT. Someone gives a damn about the music in there, and it only adds the wonderfully simple décor and warm vibe.

This is a date spot. There's no TV. I saw mainly couples of all ages and types. And maybe a couple with someone's dad.

The menu is mostly seafood, and might be Basque inspired, but I didn't recognize that at first. I read the menu as 'Spanish seafood adjacent.' Small plates. Mostly good. The cheese plate is almost perfect. It just needs two more slices of bread to make sure all the cheese and jam is consumed. The french fries are great. They are served on diced steamed peppers, which I thought was odd, but my date and I cleared the plate.

Service was friendly, attentive, and pretty enthusiastic in a way that the staff feel they are building something great.

I can't complain about a place that looks this good and has great service.

I would love to see this place evolve. The beer and wine selection is top notch. If it gets the right liquor license, could it launch a small cocktail program? Soon, it will have have light spritz drinks (think Italian spritzes). But would it make sense to offer negronis and old fashioneds down the road? And if the clientele widens a little and they start seeing solo diners at the bar, do they launch a bar burger? If they do, I'll be certain to be back.

All I can do is applaud this place for what it has done these last 2 months or so. It has one of the best interiors I've seen in a Manhattan restaurant in the last three decades, and I have it listed as one of the notable openings of 2024.
