The Fontana delle Tartarughe (Turtle Fountain) is a charming and elegant fountain tucked away in Piazza Mattei, in the heart of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto. We stumbled upon it while wandering through the area, and it turned out to be one of the most delightful hidden gems of the city.

Designed by Giacomo della Porta and sculpted by Taddeo Landini in the late 16th century, the fountain originally featured only the four bronze youths supporting dolphins. The famous turtles, which give the fountain its name, were later added in the 17th century—possibly by Gian Lorenzo Bernini—to complete the design. Their delicate placement, as if they are just about to climb into the basin, adds a playful and unique touch.

The fountain’s elegant proportions and intricate details make it a quiet masterpiece, offering a moment of serenity amidst the bustling city. Surrounded by historic buildings, it’s the perfect place to pause, appreciate Rome’s artistic heritage, and soak in the atmosphere of this lesser-visited yet historically rich neighborhood. Definitely worth a stop while exploring the area!

We came here almost by accident while walking to go somewhere else. It's a nice fountain. In my opinion, it is not one of the top ones, but I liked the design. It's none of my business, but I think that the marbles and the bronze need restoration.

The fountain is beautiful and was installed very quickly according to the story.  Note the turtles and the detail in each figure.  In the building across the piazza, there is a filled in window.  Be sure to ask for the story.
