The Spanish Steps in Rome climb a steep slope between Piazza Di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinita dei Monti, dominated by the Trinita dei Monti Church at the top. The stairway is made of 135 steps and was designed by the architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi.
Over the years, city administrators have tried to dissuade visitors from getting too comfortable on the steps, banning loitering and eating but it has never really been enforced. However, in 2019 more stringent rules were introduced to make sure visitors behaved appropriately in Rome. These regulations allow for fines of €250 for sitting on the steps, and up to €400 for dirtying or damaging the steps.
The Spanish are a stunning and truly iconic landmark of Rome. It’s very popular and therefore, it can get extremely crowded. It’s recommended to visit in the morning when the crowds aren’t as big. It’s worth taking the trek up to the top of the stairs. You get to enjoy the fantastic views and there’s wonderful photo opportunities. We came to the steps at day and early evening, it was amazing both times. If you can do this, you won’t regret it. Highly recommend. Thumbs up!!! 👍👍👍

The Spanish Steps are a beautiful and iconic landmark in Rome, perfect for relaxing and people-watching. The view from the top is fantastic. However, it can get very crowded, and sitting on the steps is no longer allowed due to regulations. The surrounding area is lively, with luxury shops and charming cafes, making it a great spot to soak in the city’s atmosphere. A must-visit, but best enjoyed early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the crowds.

Fountain at the bottom under renovation. Views from the top are not spectacular. There is no need for a ticket. There is a church at the top. If you feel tired, rest your legs in a tranquil place

It’s nearly impossible to take a peaceful stroll or a good photo without dozens of tourists around. While the architecture and atmosphere are impressive, the sheer number of visitors takes away from the charm. Visiting early in the morning or late at night might be a better option for those who want to enjoy the view without the crowds.
