This passage way is not just an easy way true this wall but a bomb destroyed it during WW2 and by request of the résidence here they made it a passage everything is explained in the plaque.

Located between  Ennismore Street, and Rutland Street in Knightbridge aria.  There was a nice historical story behind this wall.
The area between Hyde Park and Knightbridge was split into two great estates, and a wall separated them.
The residents of Rutland Estate side (the Northern side of the wall )  unable to walk to Knightsbridge due to this wall. If they need to get to the shops in Knightsbridge side, need to walk around Hyde Park, then around to Knightsbridge.

During World War 2, a German bomb landed nearby and the wall was demolished in the explosion. Suddenly, residents could walk the 100 yeards to Knightsbridge without having to take the mile or so detour!

After the war, the locals petitioned to keep a right of way through the replacement wall – and hence the “Hole in the Wall” as it is known came to be. While I found it by random chance, it is actually quite heavily used by local people who know about it.

A small sign was put next to the wall in 1998. On the sign:

This boundary wall of the Rutland estate was destroyed by a bomb, during  World War II, on 25th September 1940.
At the request of residents a right of way was established  when the wall was rebuilt by the City of Westminster in 1948 and has come to be known as "the hole in the wall".
Unveiled on 28 October 1988

The Hole in the Wall in London is a quirky, neat and I dear say, delightful surprise! This literal hole in a brick wall offers a charming yet wffective shortcut between streets, adding a touch of whimsy to your walk. It's a fun and unexpected find that makes exploring the city even more enjoyable. A must-see for curious wanderers! Only 4 stars because it has a step so is not wheelchair accessible. Otherwise 5 stars.

Used to take a shortcut through here to the Prince of Wales pub (long gone) on Fairholt street. There was an episode of the New Avengers filmed in this area, but when they went through the hole in a wall, by the magic of television Purdey and Steed appeared in a different part of London..
