@j.boroski J. Boroski- Central #throwback (experience from December) Sadly, This could be one of my favorite bars in Hong Kong if not the Russian host. She was extremely rude with us from the beginning. I might visit again if she's not there. Her alone ruined the experience. On the other hand, I really love the concept and the interior design. This is a new cocktail speakeasy bar that opened just 2 months ago in Hong Kong. I love me a good cocktail. I love me a good speakeasy bar. So naturally, I had to check it out for myself to see what the hype is about. My friend and I went at 8PM on a Tuesday night, where the bar was pretty empty. It had two other parties, so it was quite quiet. We like sitting at the bar and watching the bartenders make the drinks, so we sat at the bar. Right on top of the bar and across the part of the ceiling are statues of beetles for decoration. I liked that the chairs are really comfortable and you can easily turn your seats to the right to speak with your friend there or turn it left to speak with another friend to your left. J. Boroski is an omakase style bar. What that means is that they don't have a menu. They ask you what kind of cocktails you like to drink, what kind of base you would like, and so forth. I like smoky and peaty whisky so I ordered a whisky cocktail. Nathan was the bartender that was serving us and whipped up a fancy smoky cocktail that had an amazing presentation. The presentation was A+ and extremely decadent. The taste was missing and more subpar in that I like smoky whiskies, not a smoky cocktail that is smoky due to smoke, which was what this fancy cocktail was. No big. It was cool to try it. I got a second cocktail from Miu Miu, a different bartender that was working that night. She is super creation as well with making drinks. They apparently have variety of fruits for them to make cocktails so I asked whether they have papaya, one of my favorite fruits. To my surprise, they do! So she whipped up a papaya cocktail with a side of papaya and pomelo to go with the drink. This tequila base cocktail was basically an alcoholic smoothie, lol. The papaya wasn't ripe yet, so it wasn't overly sweet. It was definitely interesting. The presentation was A, A+ with papaya salad (haha) - who doesn't like getting something extra, especially when it's food! The taste was okay. I like smoother drinks than a smoothie with bit of chunks. Thus it was just okay to me. An hour being there, the place was completely packed! It was extremely hoppin' for a Tuesday night. The same thing happened when I went back and brought my college friends there the very next day. Wednesday at 11PM was full to the max. With only 4 bartenders, J. Boroski struggles to have the right process and operation of how they can take orders and pump out drinks at the same rate. It is definitely no easy task, but something they would need to work on if they plan to obtain customers' interest in coming back. Two times, both Tuesday and Wednesday, I have left J. Boroski canceling a drink because it just took too long of a time from taking an order to delivering it. A cool place to take guests to. But definitely recommend coming earlier in the night as it is less enjoyable when it gets super busy during later times of the night. They are open on a Sunday, which is great, because a lot of bars in Central are closed on Sundays.

Much reminiscent of Raines Law Room, I went to J. Boroski this Sunday night. J. Boroski is a Dining Concepts speakeasy, helmed by Joseph Boroski, designed by Ashley Sutton. After the child's yoga in the morning, some playtime in the park, lunch, some shopping for the child, coming back home, cooking dinner for the hubster and the child, feeding, bathing and putting the child to sleep, I preened myself up, put my high heels on (which I rarely do) and walked to here. Hidden (not just figuratively) speakeasy, if you're head down to Iron Fairies which is far easier to find, and turn into that alley right there. A few steps ahead, you'll see a door, with a graffiti-ed entrance. Get in, open the door and you'll be here. The fact that it happened to be a Mother's Day was a sheer coincidence. After waiting for what seemed like a minute, someone came to finally attend to me, and I perched myself up at the bar. There were quite a few empty seats at the bar at around 8:50 when I arrived, and I chose the one where the bar counter wasn't wiped clean after and it was wet. The bartender was prepping drinks and after a little wait, when I asked him if they had a menu, he responded that they did bespoke cocktails, based on our preferences. Great. While I waited, I asked him if he could hand me a napkin to wipe that condensation mess off the bar counter, he cleaned it up. So I had a cleaner space now. I asked for absinthe and asked him to surprise me with the preparation. I was surprised that he agreed, because the few places that I've gotten absinthe, the bartenders have put their noses up high and always recommended to have it the old fashioned way, dripped over sugar. I should've been more clear in terms of my ask, I'll explain later. When he got that glass out to pour the cocktail - that was the second flag for me that evening. OK, flag might sound a bit harsh, but that glass looked far from clean, with streaks or marks all over! And no, it wasn't that it was cold or anything. It was just a dry, unclean (or so it looked) glass. But, I'd come here to have a good time, one drink and head home. And I wasn't going to let a messy counter and an unclean glass take that away from me. He'd used butterfly pea flowers that added to that purple-ish hue.One sip and I could tell the fennel seeds flavour, but I didn't like the texture. Nothing like I've had. I'd parked my brains at home. As I chatted with him a bit, he mentioned that very few people that come there prefer anise-based drinks. I'm one of the very few in our group of friends. I continued to sip, not digging texture of the drink and thinking it's unlike any that I've ever had till date. Maybe it's because I'd brushed my teeth and not eaten anything after - you know that feeling, don't you - a sour drink over brushed teeth? I got back to my drink, still sipping and not knowing what to make out of that texture that I wasn't liking, still. The bartender then spoke to the other of egg whites. And then it stuck. That white foam! How could I have not been clear or mentioned him to stay off it? No wonder it was a texture unlike any that I've had because I hadn't. It didn't smell gross at all. I usually find the smell of cooked eggs a bit to handle, but this egg white foam did! I asked for the cheque and decided to head back home to my brains - remember, I'd parked them back! The lady who could've been the hostess or maybe the floor manager asked my bartender twice to get my check or put it in the system. The second time, he muttered to himself before bringing that to me and wishing me a happy mothers day! I could see why he was upset when I wasn't rushing but the floor manager or the hostess was when he was occupied making drinks. It was a good evening at J. Boroski. Sans the egg white foam :/ Cheers! If you're looking for something special and different then J. Boroski is the place to be. They are a relatively new bar that has opened up in Central and is largely a success. You enter through a unmarked door down a short alleyway. Once you get seated, your bar tender will ask you what kind of drink you fancy and they come back with a surprise. There is no menu so everything is a bit of a surprise. Everyone around you will have something that looks completely different so if you're up for some entertainment, be sure to sit at the bar. In the main seating area are comfy sofas and along the back side are semi hidden away behind frilly blinds which would be absolutely perfect for a date. On a Saturday, its really easy to get a seat at around 8pm but once its around 10pm the place is packed. Once it is full, the drinks take considerably longer to arrive so keep that in mind when u come.

Apparently the owner of Iron Fairies also owns this speakeasy. It is located round the corner of Iron Fairies, if you walk down the alley and see a hallway decorated with graffiti art of beetles and a wooden door, the wooden door is the entrance. Inside is like en entomologist's dream: beetles are on the ceiling and along the wall in the back are tarantulas. Some of the poor tarantulas have gotten their legs picked off from drunk people. Poor tarantulas! They don't have a menu but the server will come over and ask you what kind of hard liquor you like (vodka, gin, whiskey, etc) and the bartender will make a drink for you. We sat along the wall under the poor tarantulas. I don't remember exactly what I drank, but I think it was similar to a Manhattan and was pretty good. It's definitely an interesting bar to be in and we managed to finish off the night here with good drinks and good company.

BEST COCKTAIL BAR IN HK!!!!!! Our mixologist Joe was on point with every drink we had. You just tell them what flavors you like and he'll make an amazing creative cocktail for you. Cool vibe. Definitely stop by if you're in HK!!!!! I had 3 drinks: 1) floral & creamy 2) toasted marshmallows 3) jasmine tea LOVED ALL OF MY DRINKS. That has never happened before. They have literally every flavor you can think of. For my toasted marshmallows, he actually TOASTED. MARSHMALLOWS. Amazing.

Met some friends here on a Saturday night. Really chill vibe. Dim lights, and ultra chić ambiance. It was a hunt to find this place. There aren't too many signs as to where it is, which makes it very cool and worthy of the search! This is not your typical bar. You are waited on by a cocktail specialist NOT a waiter or waitress. You tell them your liquor base, your mood, your flavors, etc...and they come back either your inner cocktail that is mean to guide your life through the trials and tribulations of life. A MUST stop in HK! FYI: My drink came out on smoking...literally!

If you're looking for a bar worth the price of its drinks and with great service, go to The Woods instead (a 30 second walk away). Do NOT go to this bar. The service at J. Boroski is terrible, to an outstanding standard. I wish I was one of those crazy Yelp reviewers that complains about all restaurants/bars they visit so that I could exaggerate beyond belief... but, I'm not. I've never had such a negative service experience in my life. So here I am, writing this review so that you can spend your hard-earned money elsewhere or maybe influence the management at J Boroski to improve. In fact, I'm writing this from just around the corner at The Woods instead of ordering a second round at J's. We had gone to J Boroski's before and had a fantastic time. Despite a man in a fedora commenting negatively on our outfits and saying he needed to seat us in the back, our waiter and the drinks he provided were fantastic and worth the high price tag. Days later, we arrived at the J Boroski's with a friend visiting Hong Kong. Unfortunately the same rude fedora-wearing man was on duty. After we had ordered our drinks, the fedora man, (need I say more?) (who we later learned was the inexperienced manager) served us our drinks and spilt an entire drink on all of us. He rushed off to get us another drink. Later he checked the secret porn room (yes, there's a "secret" porn room) next to us to see if anyone was in there, without apologizing. Never did a waiter come to check if our drinks were good or correct (they weren't, they were quite terrible). So we've concluded that the service and the drinks aren't worth the price tag here. Later, when we asked if there was any compensation for our terrible experience, the manager got into multiple verbal altercations with us describing how he was in the right. He was respectful and calm, but he was slinging blame that we thought was insane for the service industry. Really? It's my friend's fault that you spilled a drink on three separate people? Nice, keep it up. I hope the manager responds here (I enticed him by calling him inexperienced, which he obviously is). His behavior is inexcusable and not conducive to creating a venue that people will want to visit again and again. If you're looking for a night full of poor service, overpriced, shit cocktails, and verbal altercations this is your spot. Look, I get it. You're looking for a hip, over-priced cocktail bar that's hard to find to impress your date. This place isn't worth your money. Go to The Woods.

I've been to J. Boroski on two separate trips through Asia, and both times I've had a really unique and enjoyable experience. The bartenders are all very attentive and enjoy the challenge of mixing together a lot of different flavors to make something unique. It's a great spot of a nightcap, with one of them even taking on the challenge of preparing a whiskey-based drink with coffee notes and a neat foam you might find on a Pisco. It was, by far, the best drink I've ever had. The second time around, it seemed like new people had taken over the place, but they still definitely knew what they were doing. The manager also let us try some of the special liqueurs that they prepare day-of -- and they are all quite tasty. The atmosphere has a very speakeasy vibe, though at times it can be a bit loud. The bar is definitely on the pricier side -- you can easily drop more than $100 on a few cocktails if you aren't careful -- but it's probably worth the cost of entry for a splurge. It's the kind of bar you'll always want to stop through on your trip. It's not going to absolutely blow your mind with some kind of crazy unique twist, but it hits all the notes perfectly and has a very friendly staff. Make sure you make a reservation, and you're better off coming earlier in the evening or much later at night for a nightcap if you want to avoid the big crowds.

Was not originally in my list of bars to visit while on a short trip in HK but glad I dropped in. I probably enjoyed this one the most, went solo but can imagine it to be much more fun with a group! Yummy concoctions!
