I have been lucky to stay at a few AMAN properties around the world - however the Amanyangyun was by far my favourite. The staff are extremely well trained and they really know what they’re doing. From the gardeners to the front desk, everyone is exceptionally well mannered and capable of providing exceptional service.

Additional to the great warmth of staff the property is also absolutely magnificent and it truly a one of a kind property. The history is extraordinary and the story of Amanyangyun is one that leaves you mesmerised.

I would definitely come back and I think this really is a hotel everyone should visit if they’re in Shanghai. The only downside is the distance from the city - however it is clear that the goal is to have a staycation and slow down from the vibrant city of Shanghai.

Architecturally, love it!

But service and cleanliness is below par.

- some prior guests stuck Uniqlo “XL” size sticker on the wall
- housekeeping during turndown service cleaned cups in the bathroom, and forgot to take it back or to place it back at its station
- they also knock continuously and rang the bell rapidly till we open the door (we were not sleeping, about 5 seconds of constant knocking and bell ringing to the door).
- no bellboy to help us load our luggage during checkout
- waiter in the Shanghainese dining room is smelly and needs to be trained with proper manners
- also wonder if its an acceptable norm in China for staff to wander around the guest bedroom with their shoes on
- gardeners and maids are noisy
- booked a floating boat trip, no staff was at the location to welcome us. Boatman also saw us but failed to help us, until we decided to not wait and try to approach the boat, that is when the boatman calls the service staff (in which they look like they just woke up from a nap, unpleasant + confusing face)
- staff also seems to not know that we are foreigners, despite most top tier hotels are now learning info. about their guests prior to checking in
- but service in the breakfast room (Arva) is really good
- they were were welcoming for us to request early check in and late check out

Conclusion would be that we recommend visiting for the architecture, but not anything else. Aman needs to rework on training their staff properly.

A tranquil and beautiful hotel nestled not too far from downtown Shanghai. Each corner of the hotel was intricately put together. With beautiful camphor trees in the main grounds. You can spend hours getting lost around the hotel premises and just enjoy the sights. Restaurants were delicious and very detailed oriented.. we had children in our group and they were extremely accommodating.

Very peaceful place. The spa was great here but a bit small.

Stayed Ming Pavillion Twin Bed in July 2024. If I compare my stay with other hotels, then my rating would be much higher. However, this is my 4th Aman resort I stayed in, and comparing it to the other resorts I’ve stayed, Amanyangyun offering is slightly below. Rooms and amenities were fantastic! The historical villas, camphor trees and facilities were beyond amazing even the basement parking. Food offerings were delicious, the only Aman resort so far, that not only offers a-la carte breakfast, but also buffet that has Shanghai-nese food. Property is well maintained. The internal room garden can be maintained better, though.
The letdown came from the services. Although the staff in their Chinese restaurants could be friendlier, the rest were friendly and helpful, very accomodating, happy to take you around and explain the history of the resort. Could clearly tell they were proud of Amanyangyun. But, since this is Aman, this should be given. What lacks is the detailed services. When we stayed at other Aman properties, no matter how many times in a day we would leave our room, when we came back, everything was cleaned and tidied, no dirty cups, no trash in the room, and the beds were always made up. The room was always immaculate, yet we would never see the housekeepers. We left dirty shoes outside to avoid dirtying the room, and yet they would take them and clean them up without instructed. The little everyday gift they would give us, it would always be a pair since there would be 2 of us, including the coveted luggage tags. Somehow Amanyangyun is not matching that level of service. We maybe spoiled coming from the other Aman resorts, but as Amanjunkies, we really hope Amanyangyun can lift up their service to match, if not better, their sister resorts.

It was nothing short of amazing! The vibe was so calm and peaceful, and the design was just jaw-dropping. The staff was so friendly and attentive. I also loved the cultural activities they offered, it really added to the whole experience.
