Beautiful view, despite the blue flame is not active at the moment. The sulfur is quite strong and it will itch your eyes a bit and hurt your throat if you don’t wear the mask. Walk is a bit tough because of the conditions, but just take your time to acclimatize.
I think it is a really exciting and cool experience wearing the gas mask.

This whole hike, including going down into the crater near the lake took approximately 12km return. The hike getting to the crater is pretty much all up hill, it is very steep! Once you go into the crater it has uneven steps and it steep also. I would say this is a must do, make sure whoever you book with and once you get into groups try to go into a fast group so you can go near the lake, going into the crater which is a cool experience. We loved seeing the huge lake bubbling, the smell of sulfer which stains you clothes aha, and just overall the amazing workers who wait around for the Sulfur. They get paid so little to do this job and gosh, its hard work, having to carry approx 60 kilos back to the main carpark after they get the Sulfur which they can wait around for hours. We did not see the blue flame at this time, but our guide did burn a small amount of sulfur to show us the blue fame which was pretty cool.

By the standard of world class tourist attraction as only 2 place in the world that have natural blue flame,  this place need major upgrade, pave the road, install solar powered lights and upgrade the toilets.
The view are breathtaking, and the locals are nice, plenty of parking space too

“An Unforgettable Experience – Ijen Crater Hike”

Hiking Ijen was one of the most incredible and unique experiences of my life! The trek started around 2 a.m. so we could catch the famous blue flames before sunrise. The hike was challenging but manageable, and the views at the top were absolutely worth it. Watching the ethereal blue flames and sulfur clouds was like stepping into another world.

Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be rough, and the sulfur gases are intense—gas masks are essential (our guide provided them). We also got to meet some of the local sulfur miners who work in the crater, and their resilience is truly humbling.

The sunrise over the crater lake was stunning, with the contrast of the turquoise water against the volcanic landscape. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure in Indonesia, this is it!
