I have fond memories of eating "Chinese" food in Japan. On date nights I'd go out for dinner and recall this hole in the wall joint, which was off the main road and operated by perhaps a husband and wife team. It was somewhat run down but the ambiance gave the restaurant character. Key factors were tasty food and good service. I was super impressed with the chef's talent of wok hei. On my recent trip back to Fukui, I couldn't remember where this hole in the wall restaurant was. After all, 27 years is a long time. In return, I was introduced to Gyoza no Ohsho (GO), a national chain of restaurants that specializes in gyoza and Chinese dishes that's catered to the Japanese palate. GO started back in 1976 in Kyoto, where its headquarter is located, and has expanded nationwide to over 700 locations. They have expanded internationally that includes Taiwan, Philippines and even here in Honolulu but they closed in the end of 2018 where they were located in King's Village as the property was sold for property development. GO boasts getting ingredients within the country and quality items regionally. As an example, they get flour from Hokkaido and garlic from Aomori. These are used to make gyoza, which are made by their factories and shipped to restaurants daily. The gyoza are never frozen so patrons are eating them fresh. Gyoza is their main item where 2 million pieces are provided each day nationwide. That's impressive. There are several GO restaurants in Fukui Prefecture and we stopped by their Omiya location. The restaurant was quite busy as we arrived on a Monday night at 730pm. We were seated immediately and glanced at their menu. It was a no brainer to get gyoza, but I was craving for dishes of Ebi Chili and Subuta (sweet and sour pork). My friend wanted Tenshin Han (omelette over rice) and Sautéed Garlic Chives with Pork Liver. Ramfis B., my long time foodie friend who was in Osaka at the same time of my trip, posted Tulip (fried chicken wings) on social media so when I saw this on the menu, I just had to try this. It didn't seem that long for our food to come out and one word to describe the food: consistency. All dishes were served to us piping hot, which is a major plus in my books. Personally the sweet and sour pork and chicken wings were standouts. I no longer care for pork liver but the wok hei achieved in this dish was amazing. For me, their signature dish of gyoza was just okay. I couldn't help but think of the amazing gyoza that my family makes. The omelette on rice was pretty interesting but only ate a few bites. It was good but just not my cup of tea. The Ebi Chili was pretty good but not a fan of the smaller shrimp used for this dish. Service was okay as the restaurant was quite busy and noticed the staff don't come to you to follow up. You need to flag down the staff for your inquiries. Overall, a very satisfying meal at GO where I wouldn't hesitate to eat at one of their many restaurants in Japan. Prices are reasonable and I found their food quality exceptional.
