The best meal we had in Japan. Amazing charcoal grilled eel, sea bream karaage, among others and every dish had delicious and unique accompanying sauces/ spices. Extremely hospitable service to non-Japanese too. Definitely recommend for an authentic experience. Thank you for making our last night in Kyoto so memorable!

I’m sorry, but this place deserves a way higher rating. This is was one of the most incredible dinners I had in Japan. The whole menu was in Japanese (which I liked), but our chef was very accommodating and helpful. Couldn’t recommend Gion Rohan more highly. Great value for money based on the experience you get! This was hands down our most memorable meal of our two week Japan trip. Reservations are necessary, so make sure you call ahead.

The restaurant is a small, upscale izakaya, where you sit at the bar and you receive a handwritten menu (Japanese only!) with whatever they have market fresh that day. We decided to try as many things as we could; the chef speaks a little bit of English and is friendly and helpful, he helped us choose dishes that were most representative of his restaurant.

Dishes take creative twists on modern classics with simplicity and respect for ingredients. For me, the highlight of the meal was the crispy unagi, made with a fresh sichuan peppercorn, sake and soy sauce reduction for a very subtle kick. I will definitely visit this place again when I am back in Kyoto.

Price was about 10k¥ per person for 6 dishes and a few beers each.

My mother had dinner at this place with her friend before and she LOVED it so she recommended me to book the dinner at Rohan.
Came by here with my husband and it was not course menu so easy to order one by one with adjusting your stomach size :)

They use beautiful pots and dishes and each dish is very sophisticated. Amour of food is small potion so you can enjoy others little by little. We don’t drink alcohol so it was only 10400 yen for such a good dinner.

Our table was managed by one of chefs his name is MR.Konoshita who can speak English and explain about each dish very well to my partner.

When we arrived, there is no one else but after 18:30, getting more people and small inside of restaurant was occupied so fast.

There are some menu are not available anymore but depends on season, and if you are lucky you can have them so better to ask them which is the seasonal item to have :)

If you have with alcohol, this will be the memorable restaurant. Menu is only written in Japanese but they don’t flatter with tourism, which is great. That is the Kyoto.

Now they are in my Kyoto restaurant list.
I will come back again whenever visit Kyoto.

The gem restaurant locate at small corner of gion. We were lucky to get seats on the last day of 2022.

The chef 大村さん and all staff were really friendly and prepared all dishes which are really match to daily sake.

Best service and delicious dishes are the most signatures. We can't wait to get back anymore.
