My husband and I have stayed here twice during our visits to Kyoto both 2023 and 2025. The staff is so gracious, accommodating, and detail oriented. We felt welcomed and taken care of by everyone, especially the housekeeping staff who made our room up so kindly! The rooms are beautiful, with comfortable beds and pillows, a bath/shower room that is like your own private spa, and lovely lighting from the side table and standing lamps. The surrounding area is removed enough from the busy areas like Sanjo and Gion, but easy to get around by bus or train to sites around the city and farther away. We’ll always stay here, it feels like a little sanctuary.

The Hyatt Regency Kyoto falls short of being a true 5-star hotel, despite some notable strengths. The staff are exceptional, providing 5-star service, but that's where the luxury experience ends.
Upon check-in, I was informed that my room was unavailable due to limited availability from a conference taking place at the hotel. I had called ahead to inform the hotel of my earlier check-in time (2 pm instead of the usual 3 pm), and they confirmed that would not be an issue. However, I was still told to wait. To pass the time, I had lunch at their restaurant, which was a highlight—delicious food, and the staff was attentive and polite.
After an hour, I finally checked into my deluxe room, only to be hit with a disgusting, overpowering smell in both the hallway and the room—a mix of sewage and cow manure. I immediately went back to the front desk to request a different room. After another long wait, I was given a new deluxe room on the 5th floor. While it didn’t have the foul odor, it was clearly smoked in, and there was visible mold behind the bed.
The hotel’s amenities also leave much to be desired. The day spa and gym are located in a separate building and are both small and outdated. In terms of quality and upkeep, they’re far from what one would expect from a 5-star property.
If you’re going to advertise yourself as a 5-star hotel, you need to deliver on that promise. Unfortunately, the Hyatt Regency Kyoto is nowhere near that standard and could more accurately be described as a 3-star experience at best.

My stay here was really great. The staff were incredibly hospitable from the start. When my taxi was pulling into the hotel, one of the staff members ran out to greet me and take my bags for check in. After finishing checking in, they then took my bags for me, while also giving me a tour of the property and my room.

I booked a standard room and was offered an amazing upgrade to an executive suite with a beautiful garden view. Since this hotel has so few suites and they’re all premium suites, I wasn’t expecting this at all, but it made me feel really appreciated as a Globalist.

My suite was located on the first floor, which would normally be a bad thing, but since it faces the interior garden, it’s very quiet and private. The hallway to the rooms is tucked away on the opposite side of the main entrance, so there’s very little foot traffic, and it was nice to not need to use an elevator during my stay.

The room is large and I like that the beds are double sized instead of twin sized. They’re firm but comfortable, the sheets were nice and crisp, and there’s both a soft and hard pillow to choose from. There’s also a traditional tatami style dining room, which was neat to see and I did enjoy a room service dinner in it.

The shower and bathtub area is enormous, the wooden bathtub is the largest I’ve seen and could probably comfortably fit 3 or 4 people. I also liked that the rainfall shower head and the handheld shower head could be turned on at the same time, and their temperatures could also be adjusted individually.

There is no lounge, but the breakfast buffet in the lobby restaurant for Globalists is decent. I believe Globalists also get a free drink at the bar daily if you present your room key.

The hotel does have a maiko performance on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 6:15pm on the lower level, which I was able to catch. I didn’t really care for the performance, but I liked that the hotel offered it for free, so I didn’t have to go out of my way and see it elsewhere.

There’s also a free taxi offered from Kyoto Station to the hotel, but I’m not sure it’s really worth waiting for. It’s only for MK Taxi, which is a short walk away from the main taxi line by the station exit, and the wait was around 20 mins at 6pm on a weekday. Since the distance is so short, next time I’d probably pay the 1000 yen and take an Uber.

Me and my family stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and it was very high quality. The rooms were very nice and had a great view, the service was good (the room always was nicely made), and the location was perfect for sight seeing around the city. Me and my family also went to the Italian Restaurant, which had good food. It is a little pricey, but it's a very nice hotel. (Also, I would get 2 rooms for 4 people, as 1 room for 4 people is a little too cramed) I would recommend!

Very Disappointing. By far the worst Hyatt property I've stayed at. Overpriced, poor rooms, poor service and just an OK location. Think of this place an older Hyatt House or Hyatt Place. Despite it's name it is not a Hyatt Regency level property in any way. Very poorly managed property.
