I rarely write reviews about  hotel experiences, but hotel Sowaka was such an exceptional place that I felt I needed to write one.  From the moment we arrived (leaving our shoes at the front door), to the tearful goodbye, we were treated with the utmost hospitality and service.  We stayed a total of 7 nights in 2 different rooms.  Both were extremely comfortable from the beds/bedding to the heated bathroom floors.  We ate in the restaurant every morning for breakfast experiencing both the Japanese and Western meals - they were both outstanding!  We had dinner 3 times and, once again, it was an exceptional experience from the service to the presentation and taste.  The location in Gion is superb - you walk out the door and are in front of temples within minutes.  We plan to come back as often as possible!  Truly a magical place.

Sowaka is a wonderful place to stay in Kyoto, offering a traditional ryokan experience in the heart of Gion, just a short walk from Yasaka Shrine. The location is an excellent choice for exploring Kyoto’s historic district.

We chose to stay in one of the older housing options with a private entrance, which added to the charm. The hinoki wood tub was a highlight—when filled with hot water, it released a soothing, natural fragrance, making for a truly relaxing bath. The room itself has a beautifully restored feel, though some noise from outside can be heard, which is understandable given the nature of a traditional ryokan. The heater was a bit tricky to control, but that also seems to come with the aged structure.

Breakfast was a treat, featuring a traditional Japanese meal. However, there is a set serving time, and beware the portions are very generous.
It’s worth noting that the owner also has his own restaurant in Kyoto, adding to the culinary credibility of the experience.

One of the great aspects of Sowaka is that they have foreign staff on hand, making it more accessible for international guests who may need language assistance.

Overall, it’s a great place to experience a traditional ryokan while still being centrally located in Kyoto. If you’re looking for a blend of history, comfort, and an authentic Kyoto atmosphere, Sowaka is a fantastic choice!

We stayed one night at Sowaka, it is a beautiful hotel. The location is perfect, I also like the design and history of turning an old restaurant into a luxury hotel.
However, my stay was not that satisfying. Initially the front desk lady asked us do we want a upgrade of the room to the new address, which is great, but she was also a little bit weird by saying “you can choose stay at the old room or go to the new room”. We didn’t realize there was something wrong with the new room, and we chose to be upgraded to the new room. The moment I entered the upgraded room, I smell something like newly painted furniture. But I was tired so I didn’t say anything. After going out for a while and returned the room, that smell was killing me. And we called and asked what was that smell, the lady finally told us this room was repainted 4-5 days ago. She offered us another upgrade room and the option back to our original room, we chose our original room because the other room didn’t smell right either.
We looked online and it turns out this hotel was fully booked on the day we stayed - meaning possibly the two option rooms we got upgraded were actually not available to the market. Isn’t this confusing? Why they wanted to upgrade us to the room that’s not ready to stay? I don’t even know if this is legal in Japan.
Oh by the way, our original room did not even have soaps or toothbrush, but whatever.
Feel like this luxury hotel wins on the luxury side but solidly failed on the basics on being a hotel.

A Tranquil Escape at SOWAKA – A Hidden Gem in Kyoto

Staying at SOWAKA, a luxury ryokan-style hotel under the Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Hilton’s LXR brand, was an absolute dream. From the moment I arrived, I felt a deep sense of tranquility—the intimate atmosphere, the beautifully preserved architecture, and the personalized service all made for a truly special stay. With a limited number of rooms, each uniquely designed, no two experiences are the same.

I stayed in Grand Deluxe Room 208, which featured an all-glass wall overlooking a serene garden and a private balcony. The open space, natural light, and lush greenery created a peaceful retreat in the heart of Kyoto. Walking around the ryokan barefoot, as per tradition, added to the immersive experience, making it feel like stepping into another world.

Dining at Gion Loca, SOWAKA’s on-site restaurant, was another highlight. I enjoyed both breakfast and dinner, each meal thoughtfully curated with seasonal ingredients. The food was exceptional, and the atmosphere perfectly complemented the refined elegance of the hotel.

Service at SOWAKA was nothing short of impeccable—the staff was attentive, warm, and always available to assist with anything I needed. The beautifully maintained central garden, with a history spanning hundreds of years, added to the charm, creating a space that felt both historic and timeless.

The location in Gion is perfect—nestled in a quiet area yet just steps away from Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka, and the lively streets of downtown Kyoto. It’s the ideal balance of seclusion and convenience, allowing for peaceful relaxation while being within walking distance of Kyoto’s most iconic sites.

If you’re looking for an authentic yet luxurious ryokan experience in Kyoto, SOWAKA is an absolute must. Every detail, from the architecture to the service, embodies the essence of Japanese hospitality. I can’t wait to return! ✨🏯🌿

Our stay here was hands down one of the best parts of our trip! We stayed in room 105 in the original building. While the room is small, it’s cozy and very well designed. The spatial arrangement makes it feel more spacious than it is.

Perfect location - Right in the heart of Gion. Strolling through the neighborhood feels like being transported back in time to the old Kyoto. It’s magical.

Wonderful staff - super warm, welcoming, and helpful.

The downside? We had to leave! We can't wait to stay here again next time we're in Kyoto.
