We had a wonderful stay. The beds were comfortable, water was hot with good pressure, mini split heat/ac worked great, quiet peaceful location. Small fruit and cake plates for breakfast were delicious and thoughtful. Bagged pastries were also delicious and nice to throw in the bag for a snack during the day.
The hosts were very accommodating and friendly, they have some cute dogs to say hello to as well. Would recommend.
Oh they also arranged a Maiko performance that was complementary, including a drink. It was a great experience staying here.

I wish I could give more stars. This was a fantastic experience. Tha family running things was so nice and welcoming. The rooms are amazing. We were welcomed with a local made tea and a sweet treat. There was even a show with a Maiko where she did a traditional dance and games. This was just an amazing experience, and on our next trip to Japan, this will be a place we come back to.

An absolutely incredible experience. The staff at this hotel is unmatched -- they are some of the most friendly and hospitable people you will ever find. They care deeply about your experience while staying at their ryokan. It is such a welcoming environment. Additionally, the ryokan is incredibly well located in a beautiful area of Kyoto. I cannot recommend this place enough -- I hope to be back one day! I was saddened having to leave this beautiful establishment and the wonderful family that runs it.

I don’t normally write reviews, but we had such a great experience here. The nice people of this charming Ryokan saved my trip and found my torn but still legible JRE pass in the lint trash after i left it in the back pocket of my jeans. They went above and beyond more than a few times during our stay. The owner is really cool too and we had a few beers talking baseball and trading stories. Rooms are clean and there is great service as you would expect from Japanese hospitality. This is in a premium location in Kyoto and it’s an incredible value relative to the other Ryokans in the area.

Look no further if you’re looking for a central ryokan experience in Kyoto. I’ve been to Kyoto many times and stayed at various accommodations, nothing beats the hospitality, service, location and value for your money at Gion Sano.

We booked a traditional Japanese style room with twin beds, and was surprised to find the room much larger than typically expected in Japan. The check-in process was also smooth as we were greeted warmly even though we got in super late. All the staff were extremely warm and friendly (including the two golden pups always happy to come for cuddles and pets). We could easily walk to many of the popular sights in Gion but the ryokan itself is tucked away on a very quiet street. On top of all this, they host an interactive maiko show twice a week, where you get to talk and play games with a real maiko in training, pictures and videos allowed! This alone would be worth the accommodation fee.

When we checked out, everyone came out to bid their goodbyes and we were sad to leave not just a beautiful city but the even more beautiful people at Gion Sano (and of course the pups!!!)
