A hidden gem in Higashiyama! This temple is perfect if you want to avoid crowds. It’s a big traditional japanese mansion and you can explore the rooms quite freely. The garden is breathtaking and the altars are perfect for meditation. I could spend the whole day there!

Beautiful garden to meander around and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage. 🍁

Less crowded than other temples in Kyoto making it a more peaceful experience.

Great way to escape the busy streets but still enjoy the core of Japanese culture. For a small price it is a must visit for anyone interested in classical, historical and traditional Japanese craftsmanship and architecture. Beautiful spaces and corridors. The garden is nice, quite and peaceful. Some of the exterior is under construction but it does not effect the experience. Probably makes it more of a hidden gem, for know, with fewer people. At noon there where only a handful of guest walking around. Worth every penny.

Beautiful temple and garden and much less crowded than Chionji next door. You take your shoes off first for the temple walk, then return and use shoes for the splendid garden. You can even ring a large bell. Beautiful inside and out. The goshuincho entry is hand-written and stamped as it should be. The monks were very polite and accommodating.
