Absolutely perfect experience, great vibes, great food, surprises, service, everything you expect from a Michelin Star restaurant is here. The chef is passionate and was able to source ingredients from all over Japan and especially Okinawa, the flavours varies from dish to dish but each one was full of surprise and unique combinations. I would definitely come back if I were to visit Kyoto again.

Dinner at Koke has been a highlight of our experiences in Japan thus far. We ordered the full tasting menu with wine, and we enjoyed an abundance of courses and wine pairings throughout the evening. The service was excellent, the experience was intimate, and we enjoyed every member of the staff we interacted with… which turned out to be everyone! Contrary to a prior review, every staff member we met was able to detail anything needed in English as well. Though, I don’t see why this should be a requirement for a fine dining experience in Japan. We were quickly able to experience precisely why this restaurant was awarded a Star. The Duck was outstanding. And if was up to me, I’d give them a second Star too!

Beyond the food, I want to highlight a particular stressful scenario that Koke was able to assist with. We had a non refundable, pre paid reservation via Omakase. We were riding the Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Kyoto, and we made it as far as Shin-Ōsaka before all East bound train service was delayed and ultimately cancelled due to typhoon 10. It became clear we’d be unable to make our reservation, and we tried reaching out to Omakase for assistance, but we knew their only option for same day cancellation was to charge us 100% of our booking. When we did not hear back, we took a chance by emailing Koke directly explaining our predicament and asking if they’d be willing to seat us on a subsequent evening. They responded quickly with “It’s ok!” and booked us a table the following evening. We are SO appreciative of this gesture, and we became even more so when we arrived and saw there were only 14 total seats! All we can say is, “THANK YOU!”

We had an exceptional meal at Koke. We had the dinner tasting menu with full wine pairing. It was a very intimate and peaceful dining experience, as the restaurant can only fit about 12 guests. We loved the slight Spanish influence on the food. It was a subtle cohesion of Spanish and Japanese which made every mouthful unique and interesting. Presentation was also beautiful. This was our most expensive meal in Japan, but as we were on honeymoon we felt we could treat ourselves. The meal was definitely worth it.

Many other reviewers complained about the lack of English spoken. We did not have this experience.  The staff all spoke English, some better than others, but enough to converse and have an enjoyable experience.

We have experienced fine dinning around the world and this is one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. The courses were so incredibly unique! The apple dessert almost brought me to tears, it was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had in my life. Incredible experience.

the concept of this restaurant is unique and i wasn’t really sure what the meal would be like. it was so good though. wine pairings were top notch too
