Japan has a robust tradition of coffeemaking. But sometimes, you don't want more classic Japanese pourover. Sometimes, you want a place with that overplayed "Australian cafe" vibe, serving espresso drinks topped with complicated paisley swirls, where the baristas sport artful facial hair (if genotypes allow) and cotton aprons in natural tones, and look ready to lecture on the ratios of espresso-milk-foam and ideal liquid temperatures for each step of every drink they make. Sometimes, you go to one of these places and order a cappuccino, and you cup it tenderly in your hand, and you think: "Milk, beloved whole milk, what infidels could ever deny your perfection when whirred into coffee???!" My trip to Mondial Kaffee was not one of these experiences. The small space is indeed an attractive mess of decor cliches ripped from an issue of Kinfolk circa 2010: Edison bulbs, terrariums drooping from rustic macrame hangers, raw wood furniture, fake antlers mounted on the wall, a wall clock shaped like a vintage stopwatch face. It's trendy and near Fukushima Station, and you'll probably need to wait for a seat. The coffee... coffee is about preference, but to me Mondial's coffee was simultaneously too sour AND overwhelmingly burnt. In my cappuccino, the sourness was too aggressive and weighed down the whole drink. I then ordered a regular coffee, which I thought would better suit the sourness - but it was even more unpleasant and dense, like someone had taken coffee beans meant for a mellow drip brew and forced it through a super concentrated espresso preparation. And then the coffee flavor disappeared the second it left the tongue, as if you'd been drinking just water. Same deal with the espresso itself, which was also confusing and too acidic and heavy without any "freshness." The matcha latte was nice but sweetened to Starbucks level, i.e. much sweeter than expected. According to my friend, her vanilla latte was also very sweet. Neither regular coffee nor espresso are even on Mondial's menu, which, after tasting both, I assume is out of awareness that the coffee they use is terrible for both. I wish they had just told me, "No, sorry, our beans are not suitable for pourover or espresso, it'll taste bad and unbalanced, we don't want you to pay 600 JPY for a drink we don't stand behind." I don't know where they get their beans from, but I read somewhere that they're single-origin, which seems like an even stronger reason to be more careful about roasting/extracting. Again, coffee is about personal preference, but I find it hard to believe that the bad coffee here was just me.

Caramel latte is thick and rich in coffee flavor with a hint of caramel but not really sweet. If you purchase a food item, you can usually get it as a set and have your coffee at a significant discount. The cheese dog was served hot but was just a soggy waffle filled with cheese.
