(Overall rating 4.5/5 stars) Yelp Review Challenge 2018 - 9/?? Coffeeya is a local chain of third-wave custom coffee roasters featuring beans and blends from around the world. The store I usually frequent is located a short distance from the south side of JR MItaka station, but today's review is for a new(er) location, discovered by accident during an afternoon walk further down the train line. The Nonoma real estate development, designed to add local business opportunities while utilizing unused space under the main train lines is not only brilliant, it provides a win-win setting for smaller establishments to have a presence near train stations without the huge overhead of property and location. Coffeeya here features the same menu of food and coffee beans, so there is instant familiarity to their approach. Read on.... Highlights: ++ Location: 4.5/5 stars (a short one-minute walk from the east exit of JR Higashi Koganei station. Exit on the north side and walk parallel to the train tracks heading towards Mitaka/Shinjuku (east)). You'll see the distinctive hand-lettered sign parked on the sidewalk) ++ Menu: 4/5 (same items as at the other shops; lunch specials include a drink for a slight additional charge but you do get to choose from among the premium hand dripped single-origin blends - good deal!) ++ Atmosphere: 5/5 (semi-hipster but warmly lit, with lots of wood and industrial style decor. Nice BGM and plenty of magazines to browse while you enjoy your coffee/meal) ++ Service: 4/5 (can be a bit spotty, even with few patrons in the shop. However, fear not, they are friendly once you catch their attention. Note: Regarding choice of beans/roast/grind, they are VERY happy to walk you through the process to choosing so that you can enjoy cafe quality coffee at home. They also sell coffee accessories such as pouring pots, cups, filters, everything to get started. Reason for this is they want you to enjoy their roasts as intended, so knowing how to properly brew a cuppa makes sense, right? Bonus: If you order beans to go, you also get a complimentary cup of hand-dripped coffee chosen from their extensive menu. If you've got your favorite, great. If not, it's an opportunity to sample other flavors in addition to the one you purchase. Overall, I'm very happy with the consistent approach to coffee presented by Coffeeya. Their meals are wholesome and tasty, reasonably priced and very good quality. You can be assured of getting top quality beans (roasted to preference too!) then it's up to you - are your barista skills up to par? That's what makes coffee such an interesting drink, so many things can create a fantastic or terrible cuppa. Rest assured, the staff here and at their other shops are happy to help you on your coffee journey. Highly recommended and excellent alternative to bigger chains. Yes, I'll definitely be back!
