An average hotel in all ways. The location might seem great as it’s near the station, but even on the 9th floor, the trains could be heard loud and clear. (For the record, the rooms in the Tokyo Station Hotel are entirely quiet, so better soundproofing is definitely possible) Rooms are fine but a bit tired.

The onsen was not a good experience. First off, the amount of single use plastic is cringeworthy. There’s no slipper rack, so you’re expected to put your slipper in a plastic bag and keep it in your locker. There’s also no basket in the room, so a plastic bag is given to take back your dirty towels to your room. There’s no skincare in the male bath (men need lotion in this dry weather too please), so without the basket, it’s annoying to bring our own. It is also too crowded — there were 5 men in the small outdoor bath at one point, even though it was past midnight. Finally, the onsen closing at 9am means one can’t have a leisurely bath after breakfast without waking up very early.

The guests are also an absolute riff raff. There’s folks wearing slippers into the changing room and leaving plastic bags on the floor. Folks getting into the bath without bathing. Folks exfoliating their foot skin in the onsen (?!). Some guy was running down the corridor knocking on his friend’s door and shouting “housekeeping!” sarcastically. I saw a man come out of the bath sweating so much he looked like he just finished a marathon, with his clothes half unbuttoned because he was so hot. I’m not sure why, but the guests at similarly priced chains like Nono are so much more well behaved. The hotel seems to be trying, with lots of instructional material on how to behave, but ultimately they just seem to attract the wrong crowd through no fault of their own.

Breakfast was pleasant. It’s cheaper than many other hotels in their price bracket, but the variety is a little less. The live egg station and onion gratin soup were nice luxuries though.

Well located near Gotanda Station, about a 6 minute walk. Nice waiting area with coffee and drink service. However the area is not big so was crowded during check in. Room compact but has everything you need. Nice large bath but also can get crowded in the evenings.

After facing the massive crowds at Shibuya & Harajuku... it is nice to retreat back to a quiet area at Gotanda.

Location: 10/10
Near to restaurants, massage, train station and supermarket. There is a Lawson convenient store in the hotel. I am also very happy to find Zoff spectacles shop at the 6th floor of Tokyu Square which is next to the Train station. You can get prescription glasses made within an hour if they have your lenses.

Breakfast: 10/10
Good selections. 80% Western. 20% Japanese. Service staff is very polite. Go before 8.30am to avoid crowd or else you have to wait for a table.

Room: 9/10
Small but ok for Tokyo standard. I wish they have more wall hangar in the room and in the bathroom. Room is clean.

Double Bed: 8/10
It is a little small for 2 person. If you want more space, go for 2 single bed. Pillow is comfortable.

Will certainly stay here again.

After 15+ hours searching for the best affordable hotels in Tokyo (I'm picky), I ended up booking this Mitsui Garden in Gotanda for my husband and I and am SO GLAD I did!! Rooms are beautiful, beds are comfy, and the location is great - super close to the Gotanda Station which is a connecting station for everywhere in Tokyo (it's part of the Yamanote Line).

The lobby views are spectacular and the public baths are lovely too. The only thing I was bummed about is that the public bath views of the city that you see on the website are only the mens' view. The women's bath house doesn't have a view, but it's still soothing after long days of walking around the city.

There's a vibey and yummy café right next door (Saison Bakery) that I highly recommend going to every morning for breakfast! BEST avocado toast and mochas I've ever had.

We loved it so much that we booked it again 1.5 weeks after our initial stay for our last night in Tokyo. It's pretty close to the HND airport too which made transport to/from simple (we did public transportation the whole time).

Definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed my stay at Mitsui Garden Hotel Gotanda. The room, facilities, public bath, and breakfast were all excellent, making my experience very comfortable and pleasant.

However, I found one aspect of the hotel’s public bath policy to be a bit gender-discriminatory—only female guests are provided with facial cleanser, moisturizer, and toner, while male guests do not have access to these amenities. Skincare is common for men as well, and it would be great if the hotel could provide the same amenities for all guests, regardless of gender.

Additionally, I noticed that the hotel uses too many plastic bags, which is not very environmentally friendly. It would be a great improvement if they could offer reusable bags instead.

Overall, I had a great stay, but I hope the hotel considers making these small yet meaningful changes to enhance the experience for all guests.
