Because it was our last night, we ran to try and reach the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building at 5pm to ensure we could be in line to see the breadth of Tokyo (as it was our last night). Google informed us the last entry was at 5, and would close at 5:30pm, but upon arrival, we noticed the times listed were updated to 9:30/10pm, respectively.

The wait was about 45 mins to an hour on a Friday, but that allowed us to get up in time to see the sunset over the mountains.

The observatory was quite crowded with people pressed up against the glass, so if you're expecting clean shots--don't; there are plenty of dirty hand/face marks + people breathing all over the windows. Regardless, you get a great view, and it's totally worth it.

Best free observation deck in Tokyo. There are a couple of drawbacks. First the view is obstructed by other nearby large buildings. You can't see Tokyo tower from the North Observatory. Second, it can sometimes be a wait to get in.

Early on a Saturday the wait was less than 10 minutes.

For stamp enthusiasts there is a stamp available in the observation deck. There are also three more in the tourism centers on the 1st floor.

An imposing 45 story building with an observation deck at the top which is completely free of cost for the public. The building also works as a projector screen on which animation is projected. Great architecture marvel.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is a great spot for panoramic views of the city, and the best part is that the observation decks are free. The building itself has an impressive architectural design, adding to the experience.

However, depending on the time of day, there can be a bit of a wait to go up. Even so, I think it’s a fantastic alternative to other paid observation decks in Tokyo and definitely worth a visit!

We had to queue for 30-40 minutes to go in at 4pm on a weekday but it’s worth it, views are great, Mount Fuji on one side and the city on the other, can’t believe that it’s still free to do, the light show outside is also pretty cool
