Two weeks before we were scheduled to check in for the Nautilus, we received an email from our housemaster Nappe asking what temperature we preferred for our pool, what kind of pillows we slept on, and what we liked to drink. My wife replied to the others, but the last question offered a special opportunity to playfully challenge the staff. I replied with a specific style of beer that reminded me of time spent in Germany. The thoughtfulness put into the introductory questions was impressive, and represented only the first taste of life at the Nautilus.

After 40 hours of commercial flying, my wife and I showed up at the international airport and were greeted by Nappe's colleague, "Tom" who escorted us to their private car "with wifi," gathered our luggage, checked us in for our next flight, and then brought us to their private lounge overlooking the seaplane terminal. We wouldn't have to spend our 30-minute layover bumping elbows with the normies as we were on the 4th floor sipping delicious, bubbly concoctions out of champagne glasses. We were then handed the first of many cold, scented towels. This attention to detail set the tone for the next week.

Years of travel mean that we’ve stayed at some incredible resorts boasting excellent cuisine, but I’ve never experienced a breakfast sushi course next to an assortment of cheeses and croissants before being handed the main breakfast selections. We were instructed to look at their delicious menus for inspiration as to what we wanted to order. We ate Mexican at a Mediterranean restaurant as often as we made up dishes for fun.

Finally, the diving with Hansal, Adam, Paula, and others was world class! Baa Atoll has an Unesco Reserve called Hanifaru Bay where manta rays gather in masses. The day we were there, we saw over 40, but the day before had over 200! Every boat dive was packed with seemingly more fish than water. Sharks and tunas patrolled through shoaling fuseliers and scad, while disorienting numbers of glassfish and anthias clung closer to the reef and sea fans. We even talked the staff into a blackwater dive where we saw larval pipefish and inking squids!

Our pool was 28 degrees, which is the perfect water temperature for casual dipping day or night. Nappe had prepared not one, but two memory foam pillows, and not only did he find me my style of German beer, he stocked the bars with the best brand available for export. Hefeweizens no longer bring back fond memories of Germany; they now remind me of a remarkable week we spent in the Maldives. From the dive staff to the housemasters and waitstaff, the crew at the Nautilus have the attitude, knowledge, and motivation to make anything happen at any time. All you have to do is ask.

The Nautilus is the best luxury hotel in the Maldives, and one of the best I’ve visited in the world. The ‘no time’ concept makes this the perfect place to unwind from busy life. The island is beautiful and feels very private. The quality and selection of food and wine is world class. The hospitality and staff go above and beyond. This has been our second visit and we will be back again. Literal paradise on earth.

The journey begins the moment you land at Mali airport. A resort agent ensures a seamless transition from the plane to the resort, taking charge of immigration procedures and baggage handling. The VIP launch, complete with snacks and a Muslim prayer room, creates an atmosphere of exclusivity.

The trip to the island on The Nautilus VIP seaplane is scenic and takes about 40-45 minutes, but it’s essential to note that the seaplane operates only during daylight.

Upon arrival, the warm greeting from the General Manager and the staff sets the tone for the stay. But it was our House Master, Yousra Bouchama, who truly made our stay special. Energetic, attentive, and ever-present, Yousra transformed our experience, ensuring every need was met with a smile. A special thank you to Yousra for her unparalleled dedication and warmth.

Our Ocean House with a Private Pool was the epitome of luxury. The unobstructed ocean views and the innovative glass flooring – offering a mesmerizing display of marine life right in our living room – were simply breathtaking. The excellence of the resort is further highlighted by the impeccable room cleaning service, which consistently met our standards and provided a comfortable and pristine living environment.

A noteworthy mention is the resort’s coral reef, a spectacle of nature that beckons guests to snorkel and explore. With free snorkeling gear and kayaks, as well as other delightful inclusions like daily deli-style snacks and limited free laundry services, the resort leaves no stone unturned in ensuring guest satisfaction.

Opting for half-board meant delicious breakfasts, dinners, and daily snacks at the Ocean Villa. The convenience of having meals in the villa is a thoughtful touch. However, there is room for improvement when it comes to the quality of the food. It would be great to see more attention to detail in this aspect in the future.

The 24/7 gym and padel court cater to fitness enthusiasts. Moreover, the prompt availability of a doctor on the island was reassuring, especially when we needed treatment for sunburn. Their timely and effective care was greatly appreciated.

A slight hiccup during our stay was the WiFi connection. While the island is a haven of relaxation and perhaps a digital detox is in order, it would be beneficial for those who need it to have a more robust connection.

A word of advice for future visitors: pack sunscreen and water shoes.

In conclusion, my heartfelt gratitude goes to The Nautilus Maldives for crafting an exceptional post-COVID vacation experience for my family and me. We left with memories etched in our hearts forever, hoping for the few minor improvements to perfect an already outstanding getaway.
