For years, I avoided Okra, dismissing it as another overhyped spot. But curiosity got the better of me on my wedding anniversary, so I secured a lunch reservation after learning dinner was booked weeks in advance.

The experience was, unfortunately, underwhelming. While Okra thrives on its exclusivity and reputation, the food does little to justify its price tag.

We arrived at noon, and the staff promptly welcomed us. The hospitality, I’ll admit, was flawless—warm, attentive, and professional. However, the ambiance left much to be desired. The restaurant, though cozy with a Mediterranean touch, felt oppressively cramped. It seemed as though every square inch had been maximized, evoking the claustrophobia of a Tokyo eatery. Seating, too, was uncomfortable. Within 15 minutes, my back and legs began protesting, a sentiment taller patrons would echo.

The complimentary bread basket turned out to be the highlight of our meal. Fresh, aromatic, and inviting, it hinted at the culinary finesse I had hoped for. Yet the accompanying condiments were bland and uninspired, setting the tone for what was to follow.

We started with the crab on toast, which was, frankly, a disappointment. Despite a herby topping, it lacked flavor and was inexplicably salty. The crab itself was dry, streaky, and texturally off-putting. I struggled to take more than two bites.

The "Steak and Eggs" followed—a dish that felt like a misstep on every level. The eggs, served sunny-side up, were a disaster: whites undercooked and almost rubbery, yolks raw and unpleasantly fragrant. My wife couldn’t finish hers due to the off-putting smell. The steak, meanwhile, consisted of two overcooked, bite-sized medallions that were tough, charred, and utterly joyless. At nearly Rs. 3,000, the dish felt not only overpriced but also insulting—ingredients that likely cost a fraction of the price failed to deliver even basic satisfaction.

Desperate for redemption, I opted for the cheeseburger, hoping it would be a safer bet. What arrived was an ordinary beefburger with a charred, chewy patty and little else to commend it. While the patty was juicy, it lacked the tenderness and seasoning expected at this price point. The accompanying fries, soggy and bland, were no better than what one might find at a roadside stall for a fraction of the cost.

The meal’s saving grace, surprisingly, came in the form of a drink: the Campagna with a hint of chocolate. Silky, well-balanced, and indulgent, it reminded us of what the restaurant is capable of if it pays attention to detail.

Okra, I understand, thrives on exclusivity, with months-long reservations, at times, and an air of prestige. For some, dining here may be more about bragging rights than culinary substance. But for those who value flavor, creativity, and quality over mere appearances, Okra is likely to disappoint. In a city where dining out is one of the few leisure activities, this restaurant trades too heavily on its reputation and fails to deliver the kind of experience its price tag demands.

Okra has been a standout over the years. They have always stayed ahead of the curve with regards to evolving and bringing in new recipes.

The steak for the first time wasn't up to the mark. Otherwise everything else was between good and phenomenal

I rarely give 5 stars but Okra at Zamzama won our hearts. Elegance at it’s perfection, a true fine dinning experience, the interior is extravagantly just perfect, it takes you to the 20th century Karachi, in the finest times when people and places were versatile, classy and tasteful.
Okra is not highly but highly, highly recommended to those who have the finest, eloquent taste for food and interior. Well done Okra, keep it up.

Always the most exquisite experience here. The food is 10/10 everytime.
