I ordered a $4 plate of white carrot cake, and the portion was smaller than I had expected. The first taste was bland, lacking the cai poh flavor, and it was too oily for me. I also tried the other stall in the same hawker center, and both are of about the same standard.

This is certainly one of the memorable Carrot Cake I've tasted, and I'm comparing to 10-12 places I've tried. This is on par with the same dish in Miao Sin Poh Piah & Carrot Cake in Balestier Food Centre. They both have their different strengths. Some people like the mushy wet style, I don't. I like the chunky, big pieces Kampong dry style. And this one comes closer to it.
The old man here is not very verbal, and he makes his own carrot cake, that leans slightly to the soft side, but not too mushy. His style is on the DRY side, and he has generous servings of Chye Poh so you will smell it.
The eggs comes out flaky, chunky and fragrant--you actually smell the egg. You also taste the carrot cake, and it leans slightly more to the salty side. And most of all, you will taste the charred on thin crispy surfaces, and the small crispy bits. And that's why it is so tasty and nice. It definitely lands in my book of being fragrant, where the egg, carrot cake, chye poh can be tasted as opposed to all homogenized and lumped together.
He uses a sweet sauce that is more watery (perhaps diluted) and that makes it wonderful, because it is not dominated by the tase of the sweet sauce. You taste and smell all the other ingredients.
The chilli was just right, not too hot and not tasteless, balanced.
I would say that definitely--in my books--taste better than the other stall in the same market, that calls themselves the "Unfogettable Carrot Cake." Maybe it's a matter of personal preference, but anytime any day, I'll go for this stall i.e. "Bukit Merah View Carrot Cake" at #01-37. Trust me, this is a good "dry" one as opposed to the wet ones.

Yeah maybe it depends on his mood? Then maybe I was one of the lucky ones, because I had some nostalgic old school carrot cake with those crispy bits, comparable to the Michelin one nearby, so yeah looks like there are options here

This is probably the worst black fried carrot cake that I've ever had! I don't understand why the owner is so stingy with the black sauce for this plate of black carrot cake. The amount of egg is also miserable. Taste wise cannot make it too. Pretty mood spoiling. Patronise at your own risk.

Was supporting this stall many years (maybe >30years). Since my family have shifted and I only come once or twice a year.
We make a compare of the carrot cake itself with Clementi stall, I will be prefer this stall, as you are able to get a full pcs of the cake comparing to Clementi is very fine and small pcs. As for the black sauce used, Clementi stall is much better and could taste the sweetness of the dish, where here will a bit lesser so may not be able to get it.
Here you may able to find certain crispness and more eggs.
The standard still maintained but the owner is look much older now... 🫢
