This is a must-do! Try and catch a free guided tour--you will learn more about the history of Korea than you ever thought you would. With the guide, we learned the history of how Korea got to be where it is today (obviously with a Korean narrative), but it really helped pull together a timeline of the history we had seen at other museums. There are beautiful artifacts and displays that cannot be missed. My favorite were the intact pots/vases-- so stunning! I also liked the map of Seoul that lit up with a show.

Good city history museum. Something you may want to consider on your first day in Seoul. Gives you a good overview.

They have four historical sections from the early days a thousand years ago until today. There also always have special exhibitions downstairs. Admission is free. And there are plenty of things for kids as well. Plan about 60-90min. Depending how deep you want to dive in…

Free to visit this is for me perhaps the most interesting museum in the city. It takes you on a journey from the founding of the city in  554 through the various dynasties to modern-day Seoul, previously called Hanyang. I learnt a lot about the numerous occupations of the city by the Japanese, first in 1592 and lastly in 1910, which lasted for 35 years until 1945.
I loved the cinematic emmersive experience  showcasing the modern city. I arrived early, just after 9.00 a.m., so I had the auditorium to myself.

Amazing museum displaying the vast history of Korea. Reminds me of the Smithsonian in DC. Expansive, amazing curated experience and all free.
