Had a wonderful night here celebrating my bestie's birthday. We got here a bit early so the place was practically empty, but people started to come in and the place was packed before we even realize it. Pros: Iive performance, drinks were great, the atmosphere is pretty amazing. A good place for group gathering and or special occasion celebrations. Cons: food was just okay, nothing spectacular or too appealing. The waiter seems a bit clueless, they can definitely improve on the service. But if you are looking for a place to chill on a Friday night in xinyi district, you can definitely drop by!

I usually don't write negative reviews so quickly after my visit. But from my perusing of their reviews on Facebook, I'm not alone in this. I understand that people come here for drinks and music, I also understand that it's difficult to serve a group of almost 40 people spread across 3 tables. That being said, our dinner set was ordered at 8:45 and we didn't receive our dessert until 11pm. That adds up to more than TWO HOURS to get served and this ain't exactly a 10 course meal. This is also asking our servers about our risotto twice and dessert about 4 times. The first time we asked about the risotto, the server just blew us off, saying it takes time. And when we asked again (a WHOLE HOUR) later, it came quickly but NOT hot. As in, it was sitting in the kitchen being FORGOTTEN. This was my first time at this Taipei institution for live music and I've been hearing about 15 years ago when I wasn't even legal to drink yet. From perusing the internet, I know other people have had bad service so that I'm not alone in my dissatisfaction. This was my first time at Brown Sugar and it will definitely be my last. Two hours to wait for a meal without any explanation from yhe staff is simply unacceptable.

Came here with a friend on salsa (Thursday) night- Paid 200nt cover charge (but you can get a drink that is the same price or below; any drink that is over 200nt, you can just pay the difference). Unfortunately, you don't get a table without paying/spending a minimum of 1000nt- the cover charge just gets you seats a the bar or standing space. Pros: - Live music (probably one of the few places in Taipei, especially Latin live music) - Social dancing (but most people who are dancing have obviously know how to salsa, not for complete beginners) - generally a energetic vibe, vibrant atmosphere Cons: - Food is decent: friend and i ordered house white wine and fries. Both were decent and standard, but nothing spectacular. - Waiter and bartender seem to be busy, so it's hard to their attention Conclusion: A solid/convenient place to come for some social dancing and live music- but don't expect too much from the service or the drinks/food.

Sunday - Brown Sugar (A review of Sunday Latin Nights at Brown Sugar - only) Entry fee: Free Time: 9:30PM - 12:30AM-ish (most dancers show up around 10:00PM - 10:30PM) Nearest MRT stations: Xiangshan Station (7min walk); Taipei City Hall Station (11min walk) The last day of the Taipei Salsa week ends at Brown Sugar, a lounge/restaurant in the heart of the Xinyi District. This is the only night where you can dance with a live band. Featuring the Montunos Latin Band, dancers can expect more or less the same set every week - mostly salsa, with one bachata and maybe a couple cha-chas - with the occasional guest musician and new song. In between sets, a DJ keeps the party going with more salsa, bachata, and merengue. Sometimes, depending on the crowd, the DJ will put on some Reggaeton and Latin hits after the band has finished its last set. On a related note, the bassist and his wife are regulars on the scene incredible and gracious dancers as well, make sure you dance with them! There is no entry fee, and drinks are pricey at Brown Sugar, however, I've never been pressured to buy a drink, and even have a designated spot to the right of the dance floor with couches and black mirrors where you can put your stuff, change shoes and rest. It's also the same place where the musicians hang out in between sets. A different dance experience, not only because of the live music, but the "audience" of elegant diners who usually can't help but join in on the dance floor. When you're dancing in front of the band, you get the feeling that you're on show and when you're having a good dance day - it makes for an incredible high. As a result, this is also a popular night for ballroom dancers. Similar to Tuesday Salsa Nights at Brass Monkey (Fuxing location), Brown Sugar can draw a diverse crowd on Sunday nights. Lots of tourists and business people, many who stay in the surrounding hotels, or work in multinational corporations in the vicinity like to stop by Brown Sugar for the live music and drinks. Many dancers tend to dress up more for Brown Sugar, maybe because of the venue's high-class ambiance or the "performance" element of having tables of onlookers surrounding the dance floor, but I have gone in shorts and a t-shirt without any trouble. Overall, Brown Sugar on Sunday nights is a great way to cap off the weekend with some dancing. And always makes Monday mornings more bearable.

I love this bar when I go back to Taiwan. The food, soft drink, and wine are pretty good. The best thing right here is the live band after 9pm. I recommend you guys can visit here once in Taiwan.

As a music venue, I really enjoy this place, and my fiancee loves it, so I'm sure I'll go back. There's no cover charge, and it's free to grab a drink at the bar or one of the small tables near the bar (if you can score one). I've been many times, and I'll probably go again. I cannot in good conscience give this place 5 stars, however, because the service is APPALLING. I'm talking 15 to 20 minutes between visits from a server, if any at all, and never anyone asking if we need more drinks (bad service and bad business), and negligible effort made for anyone's comfort. The bar is often 2-3 people deep and the bartenders pay little attention to the customers. Case in point, I often go with a small group, get a table with a minimum charge, and rack up the minimum with a bottle of wine and some food for the table. Once, they forgot one of our items. We forgot too. We noticed in on the bill and didn't want it anymore. They refused to remove it from our bill. So we had to either eat the loss or wait for them to bake a new pizza for us, which was a nuisance for everyone involved. Basically, go to Brown Sugar for some music, maybe a drink, and then go somewhere else afterwards. Until they get their act together with their waitstaff, don't bother ordering much here. It's not worth the aggravation. However, the music is pretty awesome, so I can't fully justify a lower score.

It's really tough to be one of the few live band bars/lounges in Taipei. People hype and hype, but in the end, tend to get disappointed. First things first, no cover! This means no bouncer, no host, no stamp on your wrist that can only be seen by black light. None of that! As other Yelpers have mentioned, service is slow (and sometimes not too nice) and food is stellar. How I look at it is not enough employees and too many tables! Maybe someone sitting at the end of a boardroom table decided that they wanted to be able to serve a 3 course meal, have a full bar and cater to 40-50 tables with minimal staff was a good idea. FYI...it's not. The food was okay, nothing to really rave about. Girlfriend and I ordered the two person shared 3 course meal for around 900NT. We ordered fries, beef fried rice and got the warm brownie cubes for dessert. It did not come with drinks! The band was good and really gave the place a good feel. It does get loud when the drummer gets a solo though! I think we can all agree that this isn't a place you spend the entire night at. As others have suggested, come here for the music, have a few drinks and go somewhere else.

Brown Sugar is a great time. Live singers woo cocktail sippers out of their chairs. With the frantic energy of a New Orleans jazz bar, Brown Sugar really gets their patrons shimmying. If you're looking for a night of dancing, or just want to imbibe and soak up the lively ambience, this a is a great place to do it. Not to mention the cocktails are spectacular. The bartenders really know how to please, and put on quite the show in creating each of their delightful cocktails. For those visiting Taipei on a budget, take note that an evening in Brown Sugar comes at quite a cost. I love this venue but I reserve it for special nights out. I also find it's better to hit Brown Sugar on weekends when it's a little busier. The space is expansive and so it's far more lively on busier evenings, when the swing tunes are booming through this swanky setting.

There are not many places in Taipei to see live music. The city is a bit of cultural desert when it comes to concerts and live performance. Brown Sugar, however offers a welcomed getaway for those seeking live music. This place is best described as an upscale lounge bar. There are plush leather couches and sheen-looking tables that surround a center stage where the singer and band perform. When I was there, they had flown in a singer out of LA who was quite good all things considered. My problem with this place is with the acoustics. It was loud to the point of being noisy, which was unfortunate. Brown Sugar wants to give the impression of being a nice, chill place to drink and take in some music. But the acoustics and echo of the place has a way of taking you right out of it. I would suggest that if you are going to go, try to get seat away from the stage.

I found: Brown Sugar Sunday Live Salsa Nights on http://taiwansalsa.net/ in Feb 2016 and in Feb 2017 when visiting Taipei. In 2016 the info was wrong, then in 2017 the same thing. Salsa band is on Thursdays. This is amazing to leave outdated info in the internet for a year or more. I had asked them through above listed contact form if the Salsa night would in fact take place, but did not get a reply. I would hope that this simply means that the contact form is not working either. I took chances again in 2017 to go and check it out, again no Salsa. Disappointed I asked to have a drink, only to be informed a 750NT$ minimum at the table, 2 drink minimum at the bar. After insisting to be allowed to only have one drink considering my situation I was allowed at least that much. I would consider this to be unsatisfying management. This was the last time for me to go to Brown Sugar.
