A beautiful old church, even though it was an armory for 400 years. The architecture is fantastic. If you like really old churches, you'll love this place.

This is a very niche church, even though it’s not located in an obscure area, being right in the first courtyard at the entrance of Topkapi Palace.

While the first courtyard is open to the public for free, the church itself is not. A 2019 review mentioned that a standalone ticket cost 36 lira, which customers found expensive. Shockingly, five years later the price has skyrocketed to 500 lira!!! However, most visitors come mainly to see the Topkapi Museum, and the church ticket is included in the museum package. So, if you don’t want to be ripped off, do not buy the standalone ticket.

Moreover, after several renovations, the church now lacks any display cases or exhibits—there’s just an empty hall, a few staircases, and some pigeons... No wonder many dissatisfied visitors claim there’s nothing worth seeing.

Since this Eastern Orthodox church is the oldest known church building in the city and one of the only Byzantine churches in Istanbul that has never been converted into a mosque, visiting it requires some historical knowledge or imagination. Tour groups that just skim the surface or those culturally uninformed such as ha2’s scheming bit*h cousin really have no reason to come here.

⚠️DO NOT BUY THE TICKET! ⛔️‼️

Istanbul nowadays has become a huge unjustified money grab, with absurd ticket prices. I have thankfully visited the most important(famous) sites some 4 years ago, and didn’t have to pay the insane prices of nowadays, but this church I hadn’t noticed at the time.

Whilst it is unfortunately among the very few traces of Byzantine times in Istanbul, much as the whole Ottoman Empire’s disregard for the city’s cultural heritage, Erdogan seems to not care about anything he can’t use as political leverage, so this church is just un-maintained walls, most closed to the public for alleged renovation, and with just one sign at the entrance giving some historical context.
A huge pity, and total scam for 18€!!

Background Origins:
Built in 337 by Emperor Constantine and rebuilt in 548 by Justinian after the revolt.
It was damaged during the earthquake in 740 and restored by the order of Constantine V - until today there are some such as mosaics and frescoes were survived to this present time.
One of the only Byzantine churches never been converted to mosque in Istanbul.
Today's it is used as concert hall such as classical music performance
Last January 2014 - it was opened to the public as museum also

It is located close to Hagia Sophia and within the vicinity of Topkapi Palace.
On my visit, entering the church you can still see lots of restoration, the remaining mosaics and frescoes.
The central area of the church is cordoned so only the cross is visible and took pictures for my personal memories.
It great to see, personally, the survival architectures from the past...

This church has been under "renovation" for a dozen years. In reality, nothing is being done. The place is in a disgraceful state. Everything is closed off, and what isn't covered by an opaque white sheet is restricted by railings. It is only worth seeing if you have a keen interest in Byzantium, and even then, you will leave with a feeling of complete disgust.
